William & George Stewart
« on: Tuesday 13 October 09 20:40 UTC (UK) »

Hi Folks

On the 28th December 1915 My GG Aunt, Rose Patterson, married William Stewart. I know all about my side of the family but its William Stewart who I would love to learn about. On the marriage certificate  he is listed as being of full age, his profession is listed as army and his residence as Ebrington Barracks, Derry. His father is listed as George Stewart with a profession of Ship Yard. I have had a look at the 1911 census but cant seem to find any matches.

Regards

Conor

The census is pretty useless if you are looking for military. They seem to be listed by initials only.
Was Wm english? Maybe he wasn't at Ebrington in 1911.
Shipyard connection suggests Belfast but if he was english then maybe you need to look at the Tyne shipyards or similar. Was George alive at the time of the marriage. If so, he may be the key to finding William !

The Tyneside firm Swan Hunter had a shipyard in Londonderry in the early 1900s- George could have worked there.  As a soldier William could have been from anywhere and his regiment just happened to be stationed at Ebrington Barracks at the time of marriage.  Any chance of finding his army records at Kew?

Hi Folks, thanks for the interest. I have no other info on the Stewarts so have no idea if they were English or not. With regards to George being alive at the time of the marriage, would this be stated on the marriage certificate?

Thanks

Irish marriage certificates sometime list father as deceased (sometimes putting in 'deceased' with no name or occupation) but often as not father's name and occupation will be listed with no indication of whether dead or alive.

Do you know if after marriage/war, the couple settled in Londonderry or elsewhere?  If Londonderry, there is at least one other rootschatter I can think of with the Stewart name in Londonderry in her line. Did he even survive the war - have you checked CWGC? If he survived and did not remain in the army or re-enlist in WW2, his records may be available on www.ancestry.co.uk and may yield further clues.

I have a chap in one of my hubby's lines,  from County Down originally, who also married whilst stationed at Ebrington. It was to a local lass and he settled there after the war. Out of interest, his marriage certificate stated his father was deceased, but this was not the case.

Also, check out this family group......could be a possibility given occupation, age of George and age of William:

note that this George and siblings living at his address were born in England, but George's children were born in Belfast, except eldest.  If the correct family, there should be sign of them in English records from pre 1891.
