Hi all
can anyone help please
Looking to find which death is the correct one.
Have a John Knights b. 1800 married to Lucy Crisp. He's alive & kicking on the 1851 census, but by 1861 Lucy is a widow.
They lived at Chillesford, which I believe would come under a Plomesgate registration. Trouble is there are 4/5 John Knights registered as having died between 1851/1861.
Anyway I can find out without having to get copies of death certs?

Hi
One of the drawbacks of the death entries for that period is that ages are not shown on the index - only on the certificate so it can get expensive.
Have a look at this which could keep the cost down a bit
Search by GRO
If you have done your own searching in the GRO indexes and have found more than one reference to the name you are researching, or are unsure which is the entry you require, the GRO offer reference checking online.
The charge is £7 for action on the first entry, which includes the cost of the certificate, and £3 for checking each subsequent reference against the information you have provided. You have the option of asking them to either stop at the first reference which agrees with your information or to check all references
You must give them one piece of information that you are sure will appear on the certificate. Unfortunately, deaths could be reported by anybody - not necessarily a family member so using his wife's name may not always be a help. If you know roughly the age the deceased would have been when they died - you can use that as a condition or his occupation or address if known.
You must fill in the reference checking sheet which is accessed by pressing the reference checking button near the bottom of the page, and fill in all the fields that you would like the entry to be checked against before you press the 'Submit' button. A certificate will only be issued if the entry they check matches the checking point you give them.

Thank you to both,
missed the last message when I looked at lunchtime, obviously mind on other things!
Entry sounds like it's just the one I want.
Now there's another query but I'll complete this and put on a new post best wishes corndolly
