Minnigaff Battlefield
« on: Tuesday 13 October 09 22:22 UTC (UK) »

I remember seeing an old map which had a battlefield marked near Machermore Castle, Minnigaff but I have searched without success to find reference to it. Can anyone put some light onto this please.

Levellar,  only thing I can find is 1306 Robert the Bruce defeated the Earl of Pembroke at Loch Trool and a skirmish between the Covenanters & Dragoons at the same place in 1685.......Skoosh.

Thanks for your time and effort Skoosh, but I'm still convinced that the battlefield I saw on the old military map was in a field two/three miles on the outskirts of Minnigaff. I know about the Glentrool and Clatteringshaws sites but they are roughly about 16 miles from Newton Stewart and it was neither of them.

It's marked on here http://geo.nls.uk/os6inch/google.html but only if you zoom  in to the white map with coloured roads..

Also on Ordnance Survey, One-inch to the mile maps of Scotland
3rd Edition - 1903-1912
Sheet 4 Wigtown.
http://www.nls.uk/maps/os/oneinch_3rd_list.html

Site of Battle AD 1308, just to the north west of Machermore Castle. Only the Cairn is marked on most of the other maps I think.

I believe it was. Castle Douglas was raided that year, and a massacre ensued.
The English were kicked out and Edward Bruce given the Lands.

Cheers Kirsty - that is spot on there is two recorded battles just outside Minnigaff no more than 2 miles. Thank you for the link to the map. Would I be breaking any rule if I post a copy of the map on this site?

The maps are copyright NLS.

This is what their site says:

Thanks kirsty I do not know why I asked the question in the first place (old age) I was thinking about how the person whom I had the discussion with in the first place would see the map as he does not have Internet?Huh

So why did I asked if I could put it onto this site for him to see it - dementia/old age/ thick fart all spring to mind.

Very sorry for wasting your time with my stupidity and thanks for your help in confirming that there was a battle outside Minnigaff.
