I wrote to one of the register offices and asked if this was a new policy as I got another wrong certificate and again the info didn't match what I asked for.

I'm still waiting for an answer!

This is very offputting for research as I had one registrar say I hadn't sent enough money and he returned my cheque for £7!

Must try and understand the GRO site.

Before ordering from a local register office its probably best to check requirements on the local register office website. Whilst I believe that the statutory fee for a certificate is 7 GDP there are quite often postage charges or other fees. Even with the GRO the 7 GDP only applies if you apply online and quote their reference numbers, if you apply by post or don't supply the reference numbers its dearer.

By checking the local websites you will be made aware of potential problems, such as Liverpool Register Office which has an 8 to 10 week delay and Islington which only issues certificates for events after 1908 and doesn't accept cheques only postal orders.
