Joseph CHESHIRE Marriage - Dunstable?
« on: Wednesday 14 October 09 20:24 UTC (UK) »

Dear All,

I am trying to find the marriage of Joseph Cheshire and his wife Ann, which I think occurred in Dunstable, possibly in a non-conformist church, perhaps about 1830. I have their daughter Ann's birth certificate from 1838 and I know they also had a daughter Jane, b. abt. 1834, and Sarah b. abt. 1832.

Although the certificate gives the mother Ann's maiden name, I cannot read it (very frustrating), however I think it begins with a J or a T, probably has 6 letters and may have an h or a p in the middle. (Sounds like a word game or crossword clue, I know!)

Any help anyone can give will be gratefully received, either from someone else who has this family and can share the information or from someone who can find it in the records. I've tried Ancestry and IGI and cannot seem to find it - either I can't see for looking or there's something unusual about the way the event is recorded.

Thanks in advance,
OzJen

1851 census has widow Ann with daughters Sarah & Jane, plus Joseph 1842 & Elizabeth 1844.  You could get the birth cerificate of one or both of these later children & see what that says.

Before 1837 the only non-conformist churches permitted to conduct weddings were Jews and Quakers, so, despite the fact that both Joseph and Ann were from Dunstable, they may have married elsewhere. There's nothing that I can see looking at Dunstable on the IGI, nor is there anything on the Allen Marriage Index in Herts.

Any chance that you can scan or photograph Ann's surname to see if we might be able to recognise it?

They were not Jewish, I know that: but I would not be surprised if they were Quakers as there are family stories surrounding people in the extended family at this time who were apparently pacifists and possibly Quakers. Where can one look up these non-conformist marriages? I looked on the Non-Parochial BMDs without success - are there other sites?

Regards,
OzJen

Looks like IMPEY to me, of which there were a couple of families in Dunstable c1800.  I'll check round

I'll look into it over the next day or two, Ausmaz; give me a few days.
