« on: Wednesday 14 October 09 22:04 UTC (UK) »

I am interested to find more about John Sanderson, age 36, who in the 1851 Manchester census was born in Cockermouth and his wife Judith ,age 36, born in Workington.

If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

Thanks

1851 census
Main St, Cockermouth
George SANDSON 60 Draper,
Ann 57 Wigton
Sarah 30 Cockermouth
Ann 28 Cockermouth
Elizabeth 22 Cockermouth
Ann Elizabeth (gr dau) 4 East Indies (Brit Subject)
George 3 East Indies (Brit Subject) (there is a second christian name that I can't read)
Sarah JENNINGS 24 House Servant, Aspatria

George's birthplace is not clear ... but 1861 gives it as Bridekirk (see IGI for more).
1851 may say Wood Hall - see map http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=311500&Y=533500&A=Y&Z=120

John SANDERSON may have married Judith BORROWDALE in 1846.  There is a convenient baptism for her in IGI (a year or two older than suspected).

Hello Geoff-E,

Many thanks for your input. The streetmap was helpful as I have little knowledge of that part of the country.

It seems to get more interesting with the East Indies popping up.

take a look at 1881 census
Daniel Sanderson age 62 b Cockermouth
wife Sarah

RG11 843 14 21

daniel may be the father of the Grandchildren from 1851

Daniel is John's brother but is missing from census until 1881 - he was a Weslyan Minister -and children were b in India

Hello Suz,

Yes, I found out by selective searching that he was. His son also is believed to be the model for Kipling's "Petersen Sahib" in the Jungle Book, Toomai of the Elephants.

Once again, thank you

Regards,

Dave
