Wellington city directories 1915-1918
« on: Wednesday 14 October 09 23:59 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

My relative may have travelled England to Wellington N.Z. as British army cook on a hospital ship.  (family folk-lore)  It is believed he may have stayed in Wellington for a time before moving up to Auckland.  Is it possible to have Wellington city directories checked for above time period?    He would be shown as John (Jack)  Hughes, occupation "cook".

        Thank you, aweepeek   Smiley

This does not address your question, but may be of interest to you.

The number of hospital ships to NZ was limited.  There is a book (possibly The Voyages of His Majesty's New Zealand Hospital Ships "Marama" and "Maheno", but I am not certain), which lists not only the crew names but also all of the patients who were transported to NZ.  Maybe a NZ resident reader would follow this up.

Hello SPC,

That would be amazing confirmation to have.  Have no idea what ship he actually worked.   Have tried to figure that one out before with help of this board.  Tried for service records....there were none.  City directory listing may be only record of his movements.

    Any help so appreciated,  AWP

There is a blog
