Birth Information on James Paterson
« on: Thursday 15 October 09 07:20 UTC (UK) »

I'm needing help in finding where in Glasgow my grandfather was born, and any details concerning his parents.  He has no middle name, and his birth date is 31/03/1901.  He emigrated to New Zealand in 1926, and died here in 1989, so getting info of his death is relatively easy this end.  There is a possibility he was born in Govanhill, but unsure.  Unfortunately, my mother passed away earlier this year, so I have no other relatives in NZ I can ask.

Hi Sledge Hammer

Welcome to RootsChat  Smiley

Can I suggest, maybe a good way to start is to order your grandfather's death cert in NZ. This should include his parents' names. With that information you can search for his birth and parents' marriage here in Scotland.

The birth date that you have of 31 March 1901 was the night the census was taken here in the UK, so he may just have missed being on that. There are, for example, 14 entries for James Patersons, ranging from 1 - 3 months old showing in 1901 in Lanarkshire.

This is a useful guide on available resources for research in Scotland here on RC www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,24468.0.html for when you are up and running  Smiley

Hi Monica:
Yes, I'm planning on getting James Paterson's death certificate here, and if he is not on the 1901 census, then I believe I will have to wait until 2011 to access the 1911 one.  Thanks for your help.

Sledge

Once you have his parents' details you will hopefully be able to start working on his family links and working back....something to keep you busy until the 1911 census is released  Roll Eyes
