Crossan missing 1911 census
« on: Thursday 15 October 09 08:55 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
Would anyone have any ideas why my grandfather Thomas and wife Margaret Crossan would be missing from the 1911 census?  He was a Derry City postman so should definitely be there.  There is nothing on the National Archives web-site.

The surname is probably mis-transcribed. Do you know their ages? names and ages of any children who might be with them? any possible addresses?

Hi,

Thomas was born in 1881 and Margaret I think in 1883, they were married in 1910. In the  1901 census Thomas was living in Wellington St, Templemore with his family, in 1911 his family were in Princes St. but no Thomas.  I don't know where to go from here!

Thank you for your reply

He could have been living on a street that the 1911 census site have not, for some reason, transcribed. I have an example in Londonderry whereby if you use place search and work through the urban district then click on the street in question, it shows no returns at all for those living there......yet there were  families living in the same street at 1912 Ulster Covenant.

example Hawkins Street:

Hi Mary,

They were married in St. Eugene's Cathedral on the 24th September 1910, this info came from the Parish secretary.

Thomas's parents were John Crossan and Margaret McLaughlin and Thomas was born 24th April 1881, this info also came from St. Eugene's.

Thank you for your reply

Louvain, i have the same problem looking for my grandfather in the 1911 census. The rest of the family are there but as he would have been only 7 at the time haven't a clue where he was.

HI
Had the same problem with my grandmother she was married in 1911 before the census, but is still listed as living with her parents and unmarried. Still cannot find her husband, can only assume he was not in Ireland on census night.  Maybe they were on holiday, try a search on the maiden name might help.

Hi

What a star you are! However did you manage that? I am so grateful for your help, I have been going round and round in circles and not getting any where.

Kind regards

You're welcome, glad I could help. I love trawling the census but it is littered with mis-transcriptions due to the old fashioned writing. I was sure yours was in that category. So I searched using area, age and just the christian name. Admittedly it will throw up EVERY Thomas but then you just have a look for something that looks close.
