Conflicting Christian Names
« on: Thursday 15 October 09 10:18 UTC (UK) »

In the recent string on Mcgregors there was an example of the father's christian name being different on the son's marriage certificate and death certificate. In this case it seems the death certificate may be the correct one.
I have this with one of my female Robertson ancestors in Perth -father Thomas on her marriage and James on her death certificates.
Anyone know why people did this and how to tell which is correct. In my case the children naming convention doesn't help.
In normal circumstance you would expect the marriage certificate to be correct but not it would appear with the McGregor case.
Any views appreciated.

Hi Cambron

I've come across this on a number of threads - but can't find a way of finding them  Undecided

Usually the person nearest the individual is correct but this is not always the case. The best thing to do is to try to find other evidence - censuses, other siblings' certs, etc.

Regards
