William Wells hanged for murder
« on: Thursday 15 October 09 13:20 UTC (UK) »

William Wells was hanged on the 18th March 1803 for the murder of George Bingham between Barlborough and Clowne.

Any information or clues as to where I can find anything about this murder would be appreciated.

My family name is Wells and I'm curious to know if this William Wells is one of my ancestors.

Thank you

Brian

Hi Sarah;

Thank you for the very quick response to my enquiry.

Yes I have seen the curiosfox message before.

£6.99 is a 24 hour subscription, ok I'll try to see what I can find out.

Hi,
Have you checked with your County Library Service to see if you can access Newspapers on Line at home?

Derby Mercury 10th March 1803
On the 6th instant, William Wells was committed to the county goal, charged upon the Coroner's
inquest with the wilful murder of George Bingham, in the Parish of Barlborough, in this County.

Derby Mercury 17th March 1803
About nine o'clock last night the Honorable Sir Robert Graham, arrived here and opened his commission for holding
the assizes for this county, before whom the following Prisoners are to take their trials,
viz William Wells, charged by the Coroner's inquest with the murder of George Bingham at Barlborough.

Derby Mercury 24th March 1803
The Assizes for this County, ended on Thursday last, when the following prisoners received sentence of death
viz William Wells, for the murder of George Bingham, of Barlborough, an old man upwards of 70 years of age;
(Then list other cases)
The Judge was pleased to reprieve the whole of the above, except Wells, who was executed on Saturday, and his body given to the surgeons for dissection.  - About a ninute after he had been turn'd off, the rope slipped,and he fell to the ground; the executioner was therefore under the necessity of tying him up a second time.

Yeah that's about as much as I saw on the online newspaper. Pity I didn't know there was so little to look at, what a waste of £6.99. lol

I don't think they published that much about murders in those days. I wonder if there are any court papers available to see.

Thank you for taking the trouble to post to my enquiry.

Hi,
Court Records are in Quarter Sessions, if they have survived, these are held at the
County Records Office, Matlock.

http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/leisure/record_office/

There are charges if they search etc.  Or you can visit and search the records yourself.

Hi there

George Bingham was my 6 x g grandfather. But, just to make things interesting, over the past week or so I've been pursuing another branch of my family tree and have found that John Machin (another of my 6 x g grandfathers) married Elizabeth Wells at Barlborough in 1737. Don't know for certain if William Wells was related but it's looking ominous at the moment.
