MILLINIER - Amberley / Minchinhampton PR Look up please
« on: Thursday 15 October 09 14:12 UTC (UK) »

Hi
I have come across this lady Dorothy Bell Milliner who was born 1892 Amberley, Nr Minchinhampton.
Her parents are not known! It is almost certain she was an illegitimate child of one of 6 from a total of 10 possibles who were all children of Albert and Ann Milliner. Dorothy first appears on the 1901 census living with her Grandmother Ann at Hawthorne Farm, Littleworth /Amberley, Nr Minchinhampton. She is in the 1911 census as working as a DS.
I cant find a record of Dorothy's birth being registered in Ancestry, Free BMD nor IGI so I cant get her reference in order that I can get her B cert to see who her parent/s may have been.
But I wonder if her christening / baptism is in the PR's and anyone could do a look up please?
I appreciate your time reading this

Nigel,

I suppose Dorothy's birth date and place are from info. given in a census.  Perhaps that was not the truth and might have been unknown anyway Smiley.

If D first appears in the 1901 census and is living with her grandmother Ann (surname not given) where does the info. of Albert and Ann M come from and are you sure of its authenticity?

Have you considered that BELL, certainly an unusual christian name,  might be her parents' surname or her mother's if she was illegitimate.  There's a Dorothy L Bell in Cheltenham - freebmd.  Have you considered also looking through the D-index for D's parents' death registrations?

Good hunting

Nigel,

Further to my last, a 100 year old map showing Amberley shows the Holy Trinity Church whilst the map of Minchinhampton shows another Holy Trinity Church.  A Rectory is also shown near each church.

The Hugh Wallis site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyGloucester_(A-M).htm#M gives extracted data from Minchinhampton parish church.  The LDS do not appear to have recorded the Amberley church records.

The above is rather a mystery Huh

Regards

Chas

Hi
Thanks for the info. Interestingly seeing the names of those who you are interested in there may be a connection - Gardener /Gardner/ Gardiner!!
I accept that Dorothy's grand parents may not have been Albert and Ann Milliner /Millner with who she is listed as living in the 1901 census. But all the other info on them checks out so I reckon it is highly likely. Dorothy's 'Grand mother'  had 10 children with her 2nd husband Albert. It is most probable that one of 3 of these could have been Dorothy's mum i.e those who were girls, it could of course have also been one of the sons who were her dad and of these there are 2 possibilities. The others were either dead or tracked to elsewhere in the country.
Albert and Ann seem to be living apart in 1901, he was living in Swindon at the Coffee Palace in Newport Street, Ann was at Hawthorne Farm in Lower Littleworth Nr Minchinhampton. Albert had 2 of their daughters living with him.
Dorothy's grand mother - Ann Wright B 1840 Bisley had previously been married to Enoch Gardener B 1835 Stroud or more likely Bisley. They lived there life at Berkely till he died in 1864 .
Thanks again for your help
Cheers

Further to this request it seems Dorothy was a DS in 1911 not at home. She WAS living with her GRAND parents in 1901.
If any one does have access to the PR's and have the time to take a look at this for a birth /baptism for Dorothy circa 1892 that would be so helpful?

Nigel,

Have you considered the Dorothy Mabel Milliner born in Tewkesbury might be the person you seek?  An enumerator mishearing Mabel might write Bell and in Freebmd for 1897 she is to be found.   A handwritten 7 could easily be mistaken for a 2 couldn't it?

Hi Chas
I like that a lot thank you. I shall have a look and get the B Cert and see if your theory comes together. Thanks again.
