James Manktelow, yeoman, of Rotherfield
« on: Thursday 15 October 09 16:19 UTC (UK) »

I have found that there was a James Manktelow, bachelor, yeoman, of Rotherfield, who was granted a licence on 30 November 1815 to marry Avis Ovenden. John Thatcher yeoman of Withyham, acted as joint bondsman together with James.
I believe that a Yeoman in this case would be "a Gentlemen farmer"?
If this was the case, why and from whom would he need a marriage licence which required a "bond"? Undecided

Hi Floggle Toggle

Usually it is because the bride is a minor that they require parents permission to marry or stand surety; but in this case the marriage licence says that Avis is 27+ and James is 24+

I see the marriage took place 3 days later

Sussex Marriage Index:
Location: Rotherfield, East Sussex,  Date:  2 Dec 1815:
Bride: Avis OVENDEN, spinster, of this parish
Groom: James MANKTELOW, bachelor, of this parish by licence

So in this case I do not know why!
