The George Pub
« on: Thursday 15 October 09 18:07 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,

According to the 1881 census my Grandfather, James N. Donnaven ( later in life changed to Nicholas Donovan!) owned a pub called The George 15 George Leigh Street, Manchester.  I cannot find any trace of it and don't know what to do next.  Has anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

Hello Lindon
Always good to have a licensee in the family  Grin
Looked him up on the online historical directories as well :
Shown on the 1883 Manchester and Salford as James Nicholas DONNAVEN beer retailer and venetian bliind material dealer.
13 and 15 George Leigh st . Ancoats

also in the 1879 directory with a partner called Chamberlin
venetian blind lath cutters by patent machinery saw, planing and moulding mills, wood
52 Lever Street

You learn something everyday . I did'nt think venetian blinds had been thought of then  Wink

Hi,

Smiley

There is a book called "Old Pubs of Ancoats" by Neil Richardson.  It gives details of the 300  Tongue pubs in the area so The George must get a mention.  It isn't very expensive at about £4.50 and I think you can order it online.

Thanks to everyone finding information about The George and James Donnaven, it has given me lots to follow up on and I have ordered the book "Old Pubs of Ancoats" so I also hope to find out even more from that.

Thanks again
