I am looking for my grandmother, her mother was Emma Pritchard and her family lived in Roddington on the 1871 census. My mother insists she was born as Ada Boston but I have an inkling that she was illigitimate and born in Shropshire as Ada Pritchard in 1875/76 before moving to Liverpool. Emmas parents were William & Mary Ann Pritchard and her sisters were Jane, Hannah & Eliza.I am hoping someone could give me a helping hand as I have been looking for her for about 18 months.

When did Emma Pritchard marry and who did she marry?

You mention Ada Boston which would indicate that Emma married somebody called Boston but I cannot find any marriage

Your mothers birth certificate will show Ada's maiden name

Who did Ada marry and when as her marriage cert may show her fathers name and will also show if she married as Pritchard or Boston

This is rather a complicated one.  My mothers birth certificate had the name Boston as her mothers maiden name - Ada married a Henry Chapman in 1915 in Liverpool after being together for over 20 years (his first wife finally died) and her father was listed as Fred Pritchard (actor). I have been on Rootschat before  trying to find Ada but that was before I found that her mother was called Emma Pritchard, this leads me to beleive that she was illigitimate. I have not been able to find a marriage for Emma to a Boston but I think I have found them on 1881 census living in Liverpool saying they were property owners at 23 years old! No Ada with them. Emma was listed on 1901 census as Emma Morris but I cannot find a marriage for this either - they have an Ada Morris living with them but this is actually my mothers older sister who was born illigitimate in 1894!have you lost me yet!! In 1911 Emma is now Emma Sykes and I have a marriage certificate for them and she is married as Emma Morris.

OK - questions - is Emma (Morris) shown as single or widowed on the marriage cert to Sykes and what is her age and her fathers name and occupation

Question 1 - Emma Morris was married as Emily Morris 6 Feb 1902 age 45 yr Widow - father William Pritchard- Miller.
Question 2 - Ada Boston was listed as a widow aged 39 when she married in 1915. Henry Longmore Chapman was listed as 58 years but I know he was born in 1845 as I have his military papers - which makes him 70 yrs old instead of the 58 yr listed - father was listed as Fred Pritchard Actor - but this seems strange as her mother was called Pritchard (an amalgamation of the 2 names!)
My mother was insistant that Ada had not been married before & was therefore not a widow as she had been with henry since she was about 18yrs old. Unfortunatley there has been so many untruths (I should call them) thats why I am having so much trouble.
The 1881 & 1901 census you have are the ones i have and I wondered if Mary Boston was M-I-Law. Other strange thing I have noticed is that Emma is with Peter Morris on 1901 census he dies in 1901 and she is married to Thomas Sykes in 1902 - was he waiting in the wings?

The 1901 and 1911 both show Ada as b Liverpool but as you already know - there is no Ada Boston/Pritchard birth on freebmd in Liverpool

1911 has her as aged 33 and married 14yrs so I think both of them were used to lying!!

Technically - showing herself as a widow surname Boston suggests she was married before and that Boston was her previous married name - although we know it's untrue

Do you have a copy of any of her childrens birth certs before they legally married.  Just wondered what name would be shown for her

Have just looked up one my mothers older brother born in 1913 and it gives mothers maiden name as Boston! I haven't seen a copy of her  other brothers birth certificate, he was 20 yrs older and I think he is the one who had been trying to cover up a lot of things. Thing is I am not 100% sure that she wasn't married before but then again it is Emma that was supposed to be married to a BOSTON.
The only thing I can think of with Ada was that she was born illigitimate to Emma in Shropshire then took the name Boston when Emma got married/lived in sin with a Boston.
