Looking for Mark MARTIN - Brazier
« on: Thursday 15 October 09 23:40 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for Mark Martin (aka James Mark Martin) a brazier born around 1820.  In the 1841 Census for Chesterfield, Derbyshire he is living in the household of William Hall age 30 (occupation brazier) and his wife Anne age 35.
In the 1841 census neither the Halls nor Mark Martin state they were born in Derbyshire.
In subsequent censuses (1851 and 1861) in Chesterfield he states he was born in Bedford (unsure if this refers to county or town). On his first marriage certificate he calls himself Mark Martin and states his father's name as James Martin, occupation navigator.
I have reached a brick wall with Mark Martin.  I have plenty of information about his life in Chesterfield, but have no idea of his date or place of birth.
Any information would be helpful

Thanks, marp

1861 shows birthplace as Bedfordshire - Bedford but nothing on the IGI that fits

No James or Mark on BVRI either. I'm a bit perplexed about his age as he was 30 in 1841 ie born 1806-11, but then 31 in 1851 and 40 or is it 48 in 1861. What was his age at death? Not that it helps a lot in finding his baptism which doesn't show at all.

Let's pick up from where we were a year ago.

James Mark Martin was a brazier. In Bedford in 1841 was Ann Martin 25 brazier, with four young children ( Martha; Matilda; Marian or Miriam; and Joseph, who are on the IGI with father Joseph). A Joseph Martin age 29 was buried at Bedford St Paul on 25 Feb 1841 who may well have been Ann's husband.

You need to check his burial or buy his death cert to see if he was also described as a brazier. Could he have been Joseph's brother? But there's a baptism of Joseph Martin at Bedford St Paul on 25 March 1812, son of Joseph and Elizabeth, so that seems to rule him out as his father's name is wrong. But could his father Joseph and James' father James have been brothers? Joseph seems to have married Elizabeth Leonard in 1805 at Bedford St Cuthbert, and had children  MaryAnn; John; Martha; Joseph; and Ann (see earlier children of Joseph and Ann) and was then buried age 37 on 4 May 1821 at Bedford St Paul.

I pointed out the marriage of James Martin and Ann Curtis at Bedford St Paul on 26 Oct 1817, the burial of a James Martin aged 33 at Bedford St Paul on 8 May 1823, and the burial of 12 month old MaryAnn Martin on 9 March 1823, and suggested these might be worthy of further attention. Did you check the parish register entries? Was James described as a navvy/excavator? Who were the witnesses at the marriage? Were MaryAnn's parents named in her burial entry? There's no baptism for her, so if her parents were named as James and Ann it would add weight to the hypothesis that they were also the parents of the unbaptised James Mark. James and Ann didn't baptise any children, so possibly they were non-conformist, or just didn't bother baptising their children.

With an unbaptised child you need to follow up on every snippet of information that might be useful. The parish register microfilm can be ordered from and viewed at your nearest LDS Family History Centre - post 1813 there are no transcripts in Beds, other than what's on the IGI/BVRI, which don't give the necessary details that you need. Repeating the same request 15 months down the road will only elicit the same responses - there's still no baptism!
