Microsoft updates - October

Don't be surprised as and when you download updates for XP and Vista this month.
Just come off line after 16 files downloaded (XP) and after checking my wifes lappy another 11 downloaded (Vista) most are security updates.
(I wouldn't mind but rarely use Explorer!)

I had read that there was a large batch of updates being published but automatic updates didn't pick them up so I used Windows Update to kick-start the process.

I had four XP machines and one Vista machine to update. It takes a while but no problems at all.

I had 16 updates the day before yesterday.  It took very little time to update them.

I don't like to brag but I had 21  Smiley

By the way - it doesn't matter whether you use another browser or not because Microsoft insists that you use it in respect of Windows updates.  For instance if you visit their update site and try to update manually then it will only allow you to do that if you are using Internet Explorer - hence the reason it has to be updated.

It was a really weird mixture of updates today.  I have Office XP and Office 2007 installed so it updated both of those, even though I only use Office 2007.  Office XP is also known as Office 2002 and there were updates for that as well as Office XP. I also got updates that are also intended for Vista and Windows 7, even though I have Windows XP.  I also got some Server 2003 updates?

Did any of you download KB953297 - Net Framework?.

I'm having problems installing this update, after searching for a solution to fixing the problem, I see a lot of other people are too.

I've tried to uninstall the older version, from add/remove hardware.  However it will not uninstall.

The Microsoft website was not helpful to me.

Appreciate some help with this problem.

Let's hope you meant Programs. Smiley

I have .NET Framework but I can't see that specific KB number listed in Add/Remove Programs.  There are a lot of .NET Framework files listed but not that particular one.  I did receive about 21 updates on the 16th October and the ones relating to .NET Framework are:

MS .NET Framework 2.0 SP2
KB974417

I also have:

MS .NET Framework 3.0 SP2
but there were no updates for that.

I also have

MS .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
but there were no updates for that either.

I guess you should go into Safe Mode and try and remove all programs relating to .NET Framework.  You need to get the order of removal right because one set of files may be dependent on another set of files and therefore it won't remove them.

Also, if you remove all your .NET Framwork files and leave Automatic Updates turned on then they might start downloading and installing again, so you may want to adjust your settings accordingly so that they just download but do not install.

In the long run though you should try and find out why this update is causing a problem and try and fix it rather than remove .NET Framework.

YES Programs it is.

This is the update causing the problem...it downloaded  16 October, 2009.
Windows XP Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB953297) .
This is the only update I have received via Automatic Updates - on 16th October.

Looking in my Programs I only have .Net Framework 1.1, and a Hotfix for .Net framework - KB886903.

I don't have any of the others you mention .

If you google KB953297 - Installation problem - you will see I'm not the only one having trouble with this update.
Some people have given instructions as to how they fixed it....  I tried uninstalling .net framework - that did not work for me, some of the others seem too complicated for me to attempt. Sad

Downside - I have no idea how to get into Safe Mode, I always avoid trying to use it.

I have just emailed Microsoft to see if they can send me instructions to help fix it.

KB953297 is an update to .Net Framework 1.1 and it can be removed using Add or Remove Programs within Control Panel.

By default when you open up the list of programs, updates of this nature are not shown. At the top of the window there is a box labeled "Show updates". Ticking that box expands the list of installed programs to include the updates.

Find KB953297 in the list (should be underneath Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1) and click on it to enable removal.

Reading through this thread, these guys seem to have solved it by uninstalling .NET Framework 1.1 and then reinstalling it.
