English Family of Leeds
« on: Friday 16 October 09 09:33 UTC (UK) »

Hello

I wonder if anyone can help me please. I am researching the English family of Leeds. I have got as far back as John English b. 1796 in Leeds, m. Martha Oddy 1817 St Peter's Leeds - working or owning a Stuff Warehouse in East Water St - which seemed to have employed Englishes for several decades. I am confused as I've found another (?) John English listed as a shopkeeper at 4 water lane selling provisions, in a Gazeteer of West Riding. Are they one and the same?

My guestimate is that he had a brother Robson (living with him in 1841). There does seem a total lack of Englishes prior to 1770 in birth, marriage and death records.
Can anyone help me please as I am well and truly stuck as to where they came from. Any info re Leeds branch of Englishes past or present would be much appreciated.

I too have been following the family tree for English from Leeds, in 1942 a Wilfred Eric English married a Rosina Key Porter and they moved around the country as he was in the army at that time.  If you would like to know more and you think it is the same family please contact me

Hello Laura

It could well be one of my Englishes - do you have any more information please? The furthest back I can go so far is to John English who married Martha Oddy at St Peters Church in 1817. Prior to that I'm struggling - even after trawling through endless directories.
