« on: Friday 16 October 09 12:03 UTC (UK) »

He was in Swansea 1908 to 1923 and on the electoral roll 1918 was an " absent Voter " millitary or Naval Service..... he worked on the docks pre war and was also a " seaman " but not known if government or merchant....
Can anyone shed any light on what a Salisbury Commendation Medal is
( my informant has wriiten Salisbury Commodation Medal and I am assuming it should be Commendation )

He...who?  Smiley
Never heard of this particular medal.
I'd recommend looking at naval records, see if you can pin him down to RN or MN

Hello Neil
The man was Thomas Withy Palmer 1869 to 1944.
The family have been trying for several years to find out more about him.
He is on the 1881 census in Swansea and the next time we see him is 1911 in Swansea   but he had been to New Zealand were he married in 1905 and he his wife and two children are in Swansea 1911
Never been able to find out if he was in the RN or MN all we know is that he was a seaman as shown on his death cert... plus the story that he was awarded the medal which has never been seen..
In 1908 to 1916 he worked on Swansea docks but was an absent voter during WW1  too old at 48 to join the Forces..

His son was in the RNVR for 3 years in Swansea..
If there is no such award may be it is just another family story

I suspect it is "Commemoration" medal

Most towns and boroughs issued these at the end of the war

Here is the Tottenham one...

They are not very "google friendly".... Wink

I also suspect that as a "Salisbury" medal, either there was some connection to that town, or it was picked up somewhere....

I think the Salisbury Club (Walter Road, Swansea) is the home of the local Conservative Association in Swansea, but I stand to be corrected!

If it is it is still hard to see the link to your man.

Thank you all for you help,
I have been in contact with the Swansea Archives but was informed that they had never heard of any such or similar sounding award..  in fact they suggested the internet..

A mystery until someone in the family unearths more.
