Electoral Registers Part II
« on: Friday 16 October 09 12:08 UTC (UK) »

I have another question regarding Electoral Registers I was hoping someone may be able to answer.

How long would a person have to be resident in this country before they appeared on the Electoral Register and eligible to vote.

My question arises due to my Great Grandfather, I know he was born about 1871 but I don;t know where he was born and I am unable to find him on any Census to date or through the BMD records. The first "official" document I find him on is his marriage certificate in 1919. He also appears on the 1920 Electoral Register. So now my thinking is he may well have been born overseas. So my question is if he was born overseas how long would he have to have been in this country before he was eligible to appear on the 1920 Electoral Register.

Any help appreciated.

Perhaps he was born in Scotland and is on the Scottish records.

You need to give a name, so Rootschatters can help in the search.

Hi LizzieW

Thanks forthereply I haven't looked at a Scottish angle as yet! Something for me to consider.

My elusive Great Grandfather's name was Charles Goff. All I know about him is he was born about 1871 (date worked out from his marriage certificate) and his father was John Goff. He turns up in North Muskham, Nottinghamshire about 1919 when he married Ada Talbot. I was led to believe by family that he came from Sheffield, there is a Charles Goff in Sheffield but after a lot of work I've found it's not my Charles Goff. The one form Sheffield was born raised and died there and his father was Thomas Goff.

As I say I haven't had any luck with census info (as yet!) finding a Charles or John Goff to fit.

If anybody out there can help I'd be eternally grateful.

Hi BG

Have you looked for Charles on the 1911 census yet?

I can't see a Sheffield alternative in the earlier censuses, even using the spelling GOUGH.

What are the other details of the marriage certificate - John's and Charles's occupations, and the names of the witnesses?

Kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

To attempt a direct answer to the question: If he was born overseas and was a British subject from birth i.e parents in diplomatic service etc. then he would qualify for registration automatically on reaching the appropriate age, or in the 19th century the appropriate property qualification. If he was not British by birth e.g. American, then to qualify to vote he must first acquire British citizenship by naturalization. If this was the case, then there should be plenty of records, try the National Archive site at Kew.

Thanks for the replies, sorry haven't replied earlier, time just seems to run away at the minute!!
In answers to Arranroots questions the marriage certificate is dated in 1919 and, shows Charles Goff as a labourer his father John Goff is shown as deceased. The witnesses are a W Cox and Amy Cox.
As I say I can find no other records for Charles Goff, but take some solace from the fact I'm not the only one with this sort of problem having just read some other threads I see others can take up to twenty years to find relatives/ancestors or abductees as they so called, I'veonly been looking for him for about five years to date.
Does anyone know if it's possible to use the Freedom of Information Act to look at the 1921 census I'm sure Charles Goff my great grandfather would appear on that and give me a place of birth or do I just continue with my search and hope I find him.

Hi again

There's a Rootschatter called Guy Etchells who was greatly involved in getting the 1911 census released early - if anyone knows about the 1921 census I would guess it is him!

Guy is the definitive source, but I recollect seeing in print (Family History Monthly probably) that there was little chance of the 1921 being released early as the FOA considerations which applied to 1911 did not apply to 1921. However, I believe that by quoting an address and paying a fee it is possible to have those particular details released.
