I have been researching the Norwich branch of my Attridge family tree and have got a problem with a Maud Emily Attridge. She got married in Norwich, March Qtr. of 1900 to an Arthur Charles English.
In a nutshell, I need to know who Maud's father was to work out whether to allocate her to George or Nelson Attridge!
If anybody is visiting the Norfolk Record Office at some point, I wondered if they could be kind enough to look this marriage up for me? The father's name on the certificate is the vital clue!!
Many thanks....

only 1 of the 2 lassess born 1882 in the BMDs has the full name you quote:-
Births Mar 1882 Attridge Maude Emily Norwich v4b p137
and the 1891 census only shows the dau of a George & Mary ... with the name Maud* Attr*
1891 - RG12/1519; Folio 21; Page 35 - Norwich, St Augustine. Catherine Wheel Opening #9
Shown as 8 years old, spelled MAUD, no 2nd name or initial
Have you found that Mrs English on the 1901 is using both names ?
Just found her - plain Maude, aged 19 ..... doesnt help !

Births Sep 1882 Attridge Maudie Norwich v4b p102
~~~~~~~~ Deaths Dec 1899 Attridge Maudie 17 Norwich v4b p79
so the younger one died - maybe ?
couldnt see both in 1891 tho ....
ah, spelled Ettridge in 1891
RG12/1518; Folio 89; Page 5 - Norwich
with Dad Nelson and Mum Mary A....
spelled Maud - no 2nd name or initial ....
shown as 9 years old
So, in summary, the lass registered as Maude Emily was born in 1Q1882, so given that the 1891 Census was held in April, she would have been 9; so prob the lass shown above, with Nelson ...
The lass registered Maudie was 3Q1882, so still in her 8th year at the time of the 1891 census; which matches the dau of George shown earlier ....
which suggests that George & Mary's dau was the younger lass, so probably if the ages were correct in 1891, your Maude is Nelsons dau ?
I wonder if the 1911 Index will help?
The index shows a Maude Emily c1882 - cant tell you w/o buying credits who else besides a Charles was there ....
brain hurts
Thanks for that Passed Master. You've just talked yourself into the same cul-de-sac I'm in!
No the 1911 census doesn't help I'm afraid. No clues in the childrens names either.
I'm tempted to go the logical way like you have but there's just that little nagging doubt in the back of my head.
well, I dunno if I have !
Based on the available age from census evidence and that she is using her full name on Birth, Marriage and 1911 census, she's the daughter of Nelson Attridge.
However, I agree that with the track record of people's ages provided on a census, theres a margin of doubt.
What you could try (rather than hope and wait for someone to visit the relevant Archives) is to order the Maude Emily Cert from the GRO, making it conditional on her Fathers name being GEORGE - that way, if its NELSON as suspected, it only costs you £3.00 ... and if it IS George, then you've put it to bed for £7.00 ...
Were George and Nelson brothers?
Yes they were brothers. Both moved up to Norwich from the Chelmsford area of Essex.
If this were my direct line I'd have already ordered the marriage certificate, but as it's only a minor line, I can't justify it at the moment.
No rush...I'll hold the query in my pending file. (the big one!!)
