Suicide in 1910, Hastings
« on: Friday 16 October 09 14:45 UTC (UK) »

Just received my great great grandfathers death cert; he hung himself on 22 Aug 1910 in a stable at 2 Edward Terrace, Hastings (Battle). Very shocked actually, I hadnt known that and Im in touch with some of his grandchildren, who also didnt know. Ive emailed the Hastings library about viewing the inquest and newspaper reports, or an obituary, but as I dont live anywhere near Sussex Im wondering if they'd send the info out? Or is anything available online?  He had been widdowed twice but had plenty of family around, I feel so sorry for him.

Chris, thankyou!!  Ive only just seen your message, sorry. His name was Samson Roberts, he died on 22 Aug 1910 and the inquest was a day later. I presume he would have been buried soon after that.  Many thanks once again  x

Hi Again

If you click on the following link and then on 'Archives' in that link, you will see that they are working on 1910* (got as far as January) at the moment - so maybe in a short period of time the info you want will be on line

www.hastingschronicle.com

Chris in 1066

*The Archives section contains news stories (day-by-day, year-by-year) taken from the Hastings press and from other reliable archive sources. The aim is to create a giant history newspaper, reporting in more detail all the Key Events, and recording many other stories of general interest. Using the Archives, you can see what happened anywhere in the town in a particular month or year, look up a special topic or carry out research into one of the town’s areas. At present the Archives cover just the years 1848-1910, but the aim is to extend this in both directions.

Try looking for the name on A2A to see if Coroner's report has been released (usually 75 years after the event I think).

I found reference to a relative's accidental death in 1930s on A2A, and file was was held at ESRO.

Thanks SSxy.  The library were brilliant and emailed me scans of the newspaper reports!  So all I need to see now is the coroners report, I'll try and search A2A and see if its at the RO.
