Hi lynne,
I am not sure when william was born, it is either 1825 or 1835.
The reason i'm not sure is on the 1881 cencus in marnoch he was 46 then on the 1891 in peterhead he was 69, then on his death cert in 1896 he was 71, I think they are the same person as my granda arthur smith is in both.
I have also found a john smith that was born in gibraltar with the same parents in 1823 ish
I hope you can help thanks Dottie.

Dottie,

Did your Ann Forbes ever marry Wm Smith?  (I'm assuming he is the father of her children) I think the 1881 census for Wm should read age 56.  I found a likely candidate in the 1851 census at Cross Slacks, Gamrie.  He is 26, born in Gibraltar and married to Elizabeth Morison. (married 17 Oct 1846 Gamrie)  though this doesn't fit with 1881 census listing him as unmarried rather than widowed.  this family is at cottage nr Cross Slacks in 1861; wife Elizabeth died 23 May 1861.  Too many Wm Smiths in 1871 census to check them all.
Is Ann Forbes the dau of Isobel Lawrence and Alex Forbes?

Lots of questions but I'm trying to get a complete picture....Lynne

Hi Lynne
Dont worry about asking too much questions I am very happy you are trying to help.
I dont think ann and william were married as on his death cert it says single but on ann's it says widow of william but I have never found a marriage. we are assuming the kids are his aswell, when the lived in aberchirder they went under the name forbes but when they moved to peterhead they changed to smith.
I am going to edinburgh in a couple of weeks so I will look at the death cert of elizabeth to see if any connection.
My ann forbes is the daughter of robert forbes and helen lawrence.
If you need any thing looked up at edinburgh I would be happy to look for you.
Thanks for your help Dottie.

Dottie

I have details from Elizabeth's death:
Elizabeth Smith, wife of agr labourer, died 23 May 1861 one PM @ Cross Slacks Gamrie.  age 35 years, dau of John Morrison crofter and Jean Brodie (dec) cod:  gastric enteric fever 3 months  Inf: John Morrison father
John Morrison was living at Cross Slacks in 1851,1861

I think you need to find out where Ann Forbes was in 1871 as well as William Smith.  He is not the William Smith listed as living in Marnoch in 1871 as I have already checked that one out.
