Relationship query
« on: Friday 16 October 09 18:44 UTC (UK) »

Hi

Because two of my ancestors who were related (but not too closely) married each other a couple of centuries ago, I can understand why Family Tree Maker can show two kinships between myself and the same person (eg 1st cousin twice removed/5th cousin twice removed), but I don't understand how my (full) brother can also show up as my 7th cousin.

Ideas?

Hi Hibee

You probably show up as your 7th cousin as well  Grin Grin Grin

It's just the way that it can show if you're not  careful. See:

So far, I've not got any difficulties in my tree  Smiley

My maternal grandfathers paternal Great Grandfather was also his maternal 2X Great grandfather. Legacy 7 balks somewhat at this situation.

Neither do I, but my guess would be horrible programming.  I would advise FTM.

Is there any point in my notifying Legacy? Somehow, I don't think so.

I don't see the problem?
Surely, if by cousin or whatever marriages, you are also a cousin to your sibling then so be it.
FTM now shows multiple relationships as you can quite easily be related to any given person in more than one way.

It is completely possible for this to be correct and it is not horrible programming.  The sibling relationship should show as the first one while the cousin one is the second option.

My sisters are also my 8th cousins once removed according to my FH programme.  This is because my 8x great-grandfather is also my 7x great-grandfather.  He was married three times and the daughter of the son of his second marriage married the grandson of a daughter from his first marriage.  Took me ages to work that one out!

Which seems similar to my Grandfather's situation Nell, in his case though there was only one marriage, it was just that the births extended over 20+years, so grandson of oldest child married daughter of youngest child, presumably while the vicar was looking away.

It's an even more compllex case than my grandfather's and therefore mine Steve, sometimes I must calculate what relation I am to my brother and my 2 first cousins, all of whom must now be cousins several times removed. My be interesting too, to see how I am related to myself. Imagine what it must be like to be royal, but at least they have geneaologists to do the work for them.

I've mentioned this on my Blog, mate. I mean, how ye direct siblings can be anything else? Just incomprehensible!

I'm trying to sort out my own FHSW.  If it tells me my bro and sis are anything but just that? I'll go and lie down!

I remember a song many years ago which ended I think "Now I'm my own grandpaw!" Anyone else remember it? By the way Steve, have you finished Oppenheimer's book yet?

To give a simple example-
If my sister and I marry 2 brothers then we are still sisters to each other but through our husbands we are sisters-in-law. The family tree programme merely gives all possible relationships between individuals.
