Hi. Have found this discussion topic(*) most interesting however it is not really helping my situation.
I have a gg gf Henry (or Harry) Aylmer MORTIMER which England Census records as born British Subject, France 1832. No record of him in 1841C so appears not to be in UK but is in the subsequent census's. He ends up a photographer living in central Wales. No record in the UK Archives in London. Obviously I don't have a location to start with in France. No apparent on-line references either. So apart from meticulously getting each department records in turn has anyone got any suggestions how to approach this.
Regards W.

Hi Gaie I've tried at length to find the marriage of Henry Mortimer and Margaret Rees with no success. They both appear separately in Llansannan Denbighshire in the 1861 Census (as at 31 March):
Henry: found as Henry Mortime, Lodger unm age 42(!), Artisan, Photographist, born France. Living Sarcens Head (Inn) High St, (he should by other records be age 29 unless all remaining census's are wrong). This record would make him born 1819. Margaret: recorded as Margred Rees, a servant with Perice Wynne Yorde Esq (Age (23)
Then found less than a year latter next on March 12 1862 with birth of their eldest son Harry Aylmer Mortimer (Jun) born High St, Llanfair, Llanfyllin, Denbighshire. By 1865 when dau Margaretta Jane born they are in Builth, Breconshire; and then 1866 when son Frederick William is born they are in Llanwrtyd where Henry establishes a photography business.
Margaret was the third daughter of a congregationalist family in Garthbeibio, Montgomeryshire so is quite away from home. I wonder if she got pregnant and they married quickly but no record I can find. Regards Warwick

It sounds like they would have likely not have married; perhaps she was pregnant and then they moved around and represented themselves as a married couple. Sometimes in these cases you find a marriage many years afterwards, sometimes nothing.
I see that in 1861 there is also with him a Claude Melnott(?), photographer b. Australia. Probably they were working together, you might try tracing this man to see if that leads you anywhere.
There is also a Julia Mortimer who was a British Subject b. France/Paris, around 1831/1835 depending on census. She was a French teacher, doesn't appear to have married.

Hi Thank you for those comments. I've tried or a while to find Henry and Margaret's details without success, hence the task of tracking Henry's birth in France.
Julia's details are interesting being the right time period. Neither Henry or Julia appear in teh UK 1851C nor the 1841C. So they are probably in France. I guess starting with the "departments" in and around Paris would be a good start to track Henry.
