Help Tracing Prussian Ancestors

Hi,

My great-great grandparents Theodor Heinrich Knack (or Knaak) and Auguste Ernestine Rettenke arrived in Queensland in 1887.  Theodor was born in Kopprow, Pommern , Prussia in 1849 and they were married in Lauenberg in 1877.

How do I go about researching further back?  Is it even possible?  And if anyone could tell me where those two places are now, I would be much appreciative.

Hi Lisa,

I tried searching for Kopprov but couldn't find anything.  Do you have any alternative spellings ?

Pommern, Vorpommern could be either in present day Poland or in Germany, depending on which part of Pommern. If polish, then there will probably be a polish and a german name for it.

If you look at this Wikipedia article for Lauenburg,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauenburg/Elbe
then Pommern that area of land to the east of Lauenburg, "under the writing"

Hi Lisa,

Koppenow is (was) a small village, ca. 500 inhabitants, near Lauenburg.

Here is  a list of people looking for Knaak/Knack in Pommern, 4 for Lauenburg and neighbouring areas and also somebody looking for Redenke from Buetow which is also close to Lauenburg.
