Many thanks for all your replies and efforts on my behalf.

Most interesting!  It seems there could be a number of options - I too found some Collis names in Oxford but have not managed to secure any one detail that could confirm a link.

In answer to your question, Passed Master, the marriage certificate states that they were both (to all intents anyway) living at 17 Swaffield Road in Wansdworth.  Witnesses were Winifred Redley and A.H.Clements.  The church was St.Olives and they were married by banns.  Unfortunately, my scanner is not working to be able to reproduce an image but it is definately Deodatus, as spelt by the vicar.  I have been unable to find any death record for him (that would allow for John Thomas to be his son in 1897 anyway - lots of 'Deodatus Collis' deaths prior to this!)

I have all the details of the Clements family.  It's just the Collis's that are tricky.  I have, this afternoon, been told of a family rumour that John Thomas Collis joined up for WW1 when he was underage.  I have had a brief look and found some possibles, but, again, no way of verifying.

Thanks for all your help - as ever on Rootschat, much appreciated.

my question really became redundant once Jen found them in 1891, the rest was samples to show the route back to previous generations.

It may well be that he stuck to the forename he used in 1901 and 1911, so a death in the name of John would be a better bet ....
