Hi there - I went to the old St John's Graveyard (now in the Columba Club car park) today - it is in an extremely sorry state and very few readable or standing stones remain. Even since last winter, the graveyard has deteriorated terribly.
I hope no one minds but before they are disappear, I will jot down over the next couple of weeks what's still there - but many of the stones are worn away so apologies if the dates aren't 100%. If anyone recognises a mistake, please feel free to update my scribbles.
RIDDELL
The stone is still standing - at the back of the graveyard towards the wall, facing towards the Columba Club building. Worn and unreadable in parts.
"John Riddell Merchant In memory of his son John, who died 20th (?) April 1862 Aged 2? Years [age worn away completely] Pray for the Soul of John Riddell Snr who died [stone worn away] 42 (?) Yrs Pray for the soul of Margaret McNamee (?) McArthur - Stone Now No Longer Visible – unable to locate it October 2009
In previous years it was lying broken towards the back of the grave-yard, hopefully some one will be able to fill in the blanks. This is an old photo. I am wondering if it is somehow connected to the Clark family (Paisley Mills) or Tower Rais. Tower Rais was once owned by the Clark family and I think the owner was married to a McArthur.
What I could make out:-
“Of your charity pray for the soul of
? (possibly John) McArthur Merchant Paisley Died 19th Mar ------------ (not sure as weeds had grown through the break in the stone) James McArthur Merchant Paisley Died 14th June 1898 (or 1899) aged 88 years”
I tried to confirm the dates for James McArthur on SP, but alas I could not find a match, so if anyone thinks it is a different inscription, please update this.
