Old St John's Graveyard Barrhead
« on: Saturday 17 October 09 17:28 UTC (UK) »

Hi there - I went to the old St John's Graveyard (now in the Columba Club car park) today - it is in an extremely sorry state and very few readable or standing stones remain. Even since last winter, the graveyard has deteriorated terribly.

I hope no one minds but before they are disappear, I will jot down over the next couple of weeks what's still there - but many of the stones are worn away so apologies if the dates aren't 100%. If anyone recognises a mistake, please feel free to update my scribbles.

RIDDELL

The stone is still standing - at the back of the graveyard towards the wall, facing towards the Columba Club building. Worn and unreadable in parts.

"John Riddell
Merchant
In memory of his son
John, who died 20th (?)
April 1862 Aged 2? Years [age worn away completely]
Pray for the Soul of
John Riddell Snr
who died [stone worn away] 42 (?) Yrs
Pray for the soul of
Margaret McNamee (?)
Wife of John  Riddell snr
who died 1st Dec 1879 aged 4? years [stone worn away comletely age unreadable]

McGinnis/Harper

Stone is still standing but is broken and the writing is difficult to read as the original gold lettering is worn away.

Sacred to the Memory
Of
Hugh McGinnis Snr
who died 15th Oct 1874
Aged 65 years
Also his beloved wife
Grace Harper
who died 29th Jan 1878
Aged 68 years
R.I.P.

Stone is in the same line of stones as the Riddell stone but is quite near the start of the graveyard, facing into the Columba Club car park.

Standing towards the back of the graveyard but facing the Columba Club. Two photos one taken at the start of winter 2008 and one October 2009 – the stones generally are deteriorating  quite quickly.

McArthur - Stone Now No Longer Visible – unable to locate it October 2009

In previous years it was lying broken towards the back of the grave-yard, hopefully some one will be able to fill in the blanks. This is an old photo. I am wondering if it is somehow connected to the Clark family (Paisley Mills) or Tower Rais. Tower Rais was once owned by the Clark family and I think the owner was married to a McArthur.

What I could make out:-

“Of your charity pray for the soul of

? (possibly John) McArthur
Merchant Paisley
Died 19th Mar ------------ (not sure as weeds had grown through the break in the stone)
James McArthur
Merchant Paisley
Died 14th June 1898 (or 1899) aged 88 years”

I tried to confirm the dates for James McArthur on SP, but alas I could not find a match, so if anyone thinks it is a different inscription, please update this.

Hi Muprhy

Many thanks for doing this - seems only time I ever get out that way is on me way to EK on way back down south!

The Connelly one I will def have a wee bit look at cos they could be one of ours - that being my family name and my dad is from Barrhead tho we spell ours OLLY rather than ELLY. Also most of them are in Neilston cem but ya never know! I do have some I can't account for so.......

Here's hoping
