Thomas Reed / Sarah Askew's Baptisms??
« on: Saturday 17 October 09 19:05 UTC (UK) »

I have a Thomas Reed Born 1799/1800.

Occupation is BrickLayer in 1841, where he was living in Westgate, Newcastle Upon Tyne. His birth place is stated as out of the county.

On the 1851 Census his occupation is Quarry Labourer and his birthplace is marked as West Herrington, Durham, England. He is married to a Sarah, doing a quick IGI search i found a Sarah Askew marrying a Thomas Reed on 02/04/1820 in Newcastle Upon Tyne. This is 8 years earlier than the birth of their daughter Jane Reed.

On the 1861 census Thomas Reed is down as being born in Pensher, Durham, England and on the 1871 census Thomas Reed is also down as being born in Pensher, Durham.

They have offspring;

Jane Reed, born 1828 in Newcastle Upon Tyne
William Reed, born 1839 in Northumberland aswell.

Sarah is down as being born in Chester Le Street, Durham, England but i can not find a Sarah Askew born in Chester Le Street around the time of her birth in 1795/1796 although there are quite a lot of Askew settlers in Chester Le Street.

Can anyone;

1) Confirm the marriage between Thomas Reed and Sarah?

2) Find any information on the baptism of Thomas Reed and Sarah Askew? (If it is Sarah Askew)

Hi Timmie,

When you say you have looked for the marriage and baptisms, have you checked the Bishops' Transcripts? http://www.rootschat.com/links/05mf/
or sites like durhamrecordsonline?

Jane's baptism might help to find her mother's maiden name, then you could look for the marriage
- and you should be able to get a birth certificate for William
possible Dec 1840  Newcastle on Tyne  25 337    Reed  William
you could stipulate you only wanted the certificate if parents' names were Thomas & Sarah before you pay for it

As for Thomas, West Herrington was in Houghton le Spring Parish: http://www.rootschat.com/links/07c1/

possible baptism
Penshaw  All Saints
8 Jun 1800 Thomas Reed, born 7 May, 2nd son of Christopher Reed (keelman, native of Washington parish) by his wife Margaret Carr (native of this chapelry)

Kind regards

Hi,
This Christopher Reed who married Margaret Carr is my ancestor. They lived at Cox Green. This son Thomas born 1800 married Ann and in 1841 census they were living at Whitburn Street, Monkwearmouth. Thomas is working as a Waterman. Their children are
Christopher age 18
Margaret 14
Jane 12
Isabella 7
Thomas 5
Mary 4
Alice 2

In 1851 census they are living in Bonnersfield Monkwearmouth. Thomas is a Keelman. Only Isabella, Thomas, Mary and Alice are at home.

1861 census they are still in Bonnersfield and 1871 Ann is a widow still living in Bonnersfield.

I don't think this is the family you're looking for.

Hi Cloud

So that rules out the baptism I found for Thomas in Penshaw 1800, which is very helpful  Smiley

Timmie has been online since first posting the query, but hasn't replied here, so will wait to see if the suggestions I made were of any use, and if Timmie got William's birth certificate to confirm mother's maiden name, before looking further

Kind regards
