Looking for info on Murphy family of Newry
« on: Saturday 17 October 09 23:08 UTC (UK) »

I don't know if anyone can help but I hope so. The only info I have on my g.grandmother is the following: Her name was Sarah Murphy and she was born in 1871 in Newry, her parents were John Murphy and Catherine Quin and she had a sister named Catherine born in 1874 in Newry. Thats all I know so hoping there is someone out there that can help me find out a bit more. I don't even know which part of Newry she came from. I think her father was dead by 1891 when she married a Thomas Wilson in Glasgow. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Boop,
I cannot find a marriage for your couple but doing a parent search on IGI gives the following

Patrick  1 Sept 1865  Newry
Sarah 21 Sept 1871  Newry sub-district No 2
Catherine 14 Jul 1874 Newry Sub-district No2
Catherine 14 Jan 1878.

Patrick's birth suggests they may have been married before 1864 when Civil Registration for Catholic marriages started.

I do not know Newry but I am sure that someone will explain where Sub-district No 2 is.

Regards

  Hi Boop,
Have a look at the Newry pages at  http://www.raymondscountydownwebsite.com/html/index2.htm

Thank you for the replies, I wonder if the first Catherine died or if the second Catherine was a later baptism for the first. I didn't know there was a Patrick thanks for the info. I have already looked on the Raymondscountydown website but all I could find was the births for Sarah and Catherine but it didn't give a district it just said Newry.
Thanks again

Catherine 14 Jan 1878.

IGI lists the 2nd Catherine as born 14 Jan.1877 not 1878.

Boop,
I think that the first Catherine died as the website describes both events as births.
