Orkney Newspapers
« on: Sunday 18 October 09 00:21 UTC (UK) »

The Orcadian and The Orkney Herald (latter no longer published) are said to be available on microfilm at the Orkney Library and Archive.

This implies that they should also be available at other large (e.g. university) libraries that hold worldwide newspaper archives.  Does anyone know if this is correct?   WorldCat doesn't seem to include newspapers in its index.

Does anyone know if either, or both, of these newspapers normally printed obituaries for Orcadians, say between the 1880s and 1930s?

How about genealogist's for hire in Orkney that I could pay to search obits?  I have death records with good dates.

Thanks very much.

Nick

The orkney family history society is based in the Kirkwall Library and are usually open from 2 - 4pm weekdays, someone there will be able to help you

The Orcadian and Orkney Today ( both the local newspapers are based at Hatston ) www.orcadian.co.uk

another good site is ambaile.org.uk and search the newspaper indexes

Thanks all for input.  I maybe should have pointed out I am in western US, and have been doing this research for 20 years.  I have all that censuses, BMDs, etc. can offer.

My feeling is that browsing old newspapers might be useful ever since someone directed me to a WWI Orkney newspaper obit for a cousin.

Next time I make the 200 mile trip to Seattle I will check to see if the University of Washington Libraries have the microfilm (or maybe I'll check their online catalog now).

You should also look at http://www.orkneycommunities.co.uk/imagelibrary/ which contains over 7000 photos including many family, school and social groups.  Another useful website for your relative who was in WW1 is http://www.rbls-kirkwall.org.uk/memorials.html which has details and some photos of soldiers from WW1 and WW2.
