wexford...hanley/hanly/o'hanloon
« on: Sunday 18 October 09 00:43 UTC (UK) »

im trying to find some form of ancestry for my father(deceased).
his name was james joseph hanley,(he always spelt his name that way, HANLEY, but other members of his family spelt it HANLY,  although i am  informed that the correct spelling of the traditional way is O'HANLOON possibly?)

he was born in st patrics square dublin but was apprently reared in wexford born 1925 deceaced in stoke on trent in 1990.

he served in the british army during word war two in the royal artillery as far as i am  aware.

his father was  apprently a tram driver, and i am  not aware of what occupation if any his mother may have had.

i dont realy know where to start looking as far as the researching of my fathers ancestry is concerned  as i am  only just now trying to look in to the matter after wishing to do so for several years, also theres the finacial aspect of research etc due to very limited budget and would appreciate any and all help that may be supplied in resect of this matter, also any advice that may be supplied would be very appreciated.

Welcome to Rootschat. It's not easy to get such recent information online but this is a good time to start researching your Irish roots since there have been a few (free) Irish resources put online these last few months.
First step will be to get your father's birth certificate which should list names of both parents, exact date and place of birth, father's occupation (which may have been different in Ireland). Then with the parents' names you'll need to search for their marriage certificate which will list where they were living as well as date and place of marriage and their fathers' names and occupations.
Once you have the above details you can search 1911 census online and hopefully find your grandparents living with their families. This census asked married women how many years married, how many children and how many children living and all these details will help you trace back another generation.

Here's the link for searching civil registrations (births, deaths, marriages)-

Here's link for ordering certificates-

Let us know if you have any questions or problems and we'll try to help you.

If you've gotten your father's birth certificate you should now have names of his parents and you can search civil index to find their marriage, etc. Your grandparents should also appear in 1911 census if they were living in Ireland at the time (links for both these sources given earlier).
