James Campbell, Ardbennie Farm
« on: Sunday 18 October 09 10:17 UTC (UK) »

My great-grandfather James Campbell, born 1836, came to Australia in 1857. His father was also named James Campbell, occupation Custodian of an Estate. James Campbell's house in Australia was called Ardbennie. I would be interested in any history of the Campbells at Ardbennie in the 1800s.

Hi Essem

Welcome to RootsChat  Smiley

Have you tried searching for James in the censuses before he left for Australia? There is one entry coming up with a reference to Ardbennie in the 1851 census:

James Campbell 44, weaver, b. Madderty
Isabella Campbell 56, sister b. Madderty
James Campbell 14, farm lab., b. Madderty
William Campbell 10 b. Madderty
Pattrick Skally 21, visitor, rail lab., b. Ireland

Address: Bf Middle Ardbennie, Madderty Perthshire

Do you have anything on James' mother to try and identify his mother?

A couple of possible entries coming up for the 1841 census in Madderty:

James Campbell 30, Cotton H L W (hand loom weaver)
Isebell Campbell 45, Cotton H L W
James Campbell 5
Robert Culbert 15

Address: North Ardluim, Madderty

And I thought this might William (who shows as son of James in 1851) perhaps with paternal grandfather in 1841:

James Campbell 70, Cotton H L W
William Campbell 1
Janet Steventon 30
Janet Couper 5

Address: Bellyclow, Madderty

These entries are the only James Campbell entries coming up in Madderty over the two cenuses. Can't as yet see a reference to a 'Custodian of an Estate'.

It would help if you were able to confirm James' mother's name to try and confirm his family back in Perthshire.

Possible fly in the ointment with the James, son of James that we found in the earlier censuses. There is this entry in 1861, which might be connected the James found earlier in Madderty:

James Campbell 26, plougman b. Madderty
Grace Campbell 24 b. Crieff, Perthshire
Margaret Campbell 6
James Campbell 4
Elisabeth Campbell 2
William Campbell 4 Months

Address: Upper Lochlane, Monzievaird and Strowan, Perthshire

Many thanks to Monica and ev for your amazingly quick response with the census information. sighting the 1 YO William is very interesting. I hope that you get this message I have not been able to get back to your replies, probably my lack of knowledge about the system.

Regarding James' mother, his certificates in Australia all give his mother as Elizabeth Livingston or Levingston. However I have the following copies:

In Little Dunkfeld 25 August 1833 James Campbell married to Catherine McLiech, and a baptism record James Campbell born to James Campbell farmer and Catherine McLiech born 7 May 1836.

As there is no record of a wife in the 1841 or 1851 cencus I am wondering if James' mother died at or after the birth of William and Elizabeth Livingston came on the scene later and raised James.

Thank again for your help.

About the possible fly in the ointment with census of 1861, this James could not have been mine as my great-grandfather James came to Australia in 1857 +or- a year, and married in Sydney in 1863. hopefully jhe is a different person to the earlier mentioned ones

There is a possible Christening on the IGI:

James Campbell 18th of October 1836, Relief United Presbyterian, Crieff
Father James Campbell.

Thanks Kirsty. The middle names David Lyon do not come up in any of the later records that I have  but as there are no other electors on the roll there he may have been an ancestor.

Thanks to all those that have contributed to this posting. I will be away from my computer for two weeks relaxing at the coast.
I have tried a number of searches for the mother of my great-grandfather James Campbell said to be Elizabeth Livingston without success so if anyone can find a link I would be most grateful.
Bye for now
