Henry TARRANT of Highworth
« on: Sunday 18 October 09 11:33 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

I am currently trying to trace the Tarrant side of my family tree, and have traced back to Alfred Tarrant, b 1846 in Swindon, or possibly Highworth.

On his birth certificate, Alfred is listed as having Henry Tarrant (job cordwainer, ie a bootmaker) and Anne Tarrant formerly Horne as parents. I can find in censuses a Henry b 1807 and Anne Tarrant b 1811 or 1807 in Highworth, with Henry as a cordwainer. However, I can find no evidence of Alfred ever living with them, throughout 1851 - 1871. I cannot find Henry and Anne's marriage, although I am guessing it is circa 1834, before their first child, Louisa, is born in 1835.

I can find an Alfred Tarrant as attending a school in Fairford, Glos, born about 1848, in 1861, which is only 8 miles from Fairford, but cannot understand why I can't see him with Henry and Anne in 1851, when he would have been around 6.

I am also stuck trying to trace Henry's parents - possibly his father is called Richard, but that is all I know.

Any help would be much appreciated.

thanks,
Emma

thanks very much Kris,

would you have the details so that I could request the marriage certificate? I cannot find this record on ancestry.co.uk.

Many thanks,

Hi Emma,

There is no marriage certificate - civil registration did not begin until July 1837. All there is an entry in the parish register. You could order a copy from the records office. It will not list parents names. Witness names may or may not help. It was by licence so if the licence bond can be located it may contain further information also.
