Hi Jeff:  welcome to Rootschat.

Not sure where you live, but Cumbria Archives - www.cumbria.gov.uk - may be your best bet.  They would have copies of the parish records at their offices in Barrow in Furness and/or Carlisle.

I've had a quick look at the IGI online information, but there is nothing for a Robert Jefferson born around 1798 in Egremont - but that doesn't mean to say that that your information is incorrect.

Perhaps you could consider also re-posting your query on the Cumbria section of Rootschat.  People with a more local knowledge may have suggestions and tips to help you find Robert and his parents.

Good luck

Jeff,

If you are a long way from Cumbria it is possible to obtain the use of microfilmed parish registers at your local LDS family history centre. Look on the IGI web site familysearch.org there are several drop down menus along the top of the home page. The last one on the right has a library catalog (American spelling!!) It will allow you to search for the place your ancestors lived and see if the LDS Church have filmed the parish registers and/or BTs.

The location of your local LDS Family History Centre will be in the menu headed "Family History Centers" on the same tab. Do telephone them before you go and make an appointment. If no-one is expected the centre will probably be closed even if advertised as normally open on that day and you could have a wasted journey. They will be able to order the film for you at a charge of £7.50 and will inform you when the film comes to the centre. You will then be able to consult it at the Centre for the next three months.

Barrow don't sound as though they were very helpful - unusual!!  Sad  Janeada is correct, the LDS do seem to have BTs for the period you are looking for, but if you are in Cumbria then perhaps a phonecall to Whitehaven would help to try to locate Egremont records.  Unfortunately I haven't had to deal with that area of the country.  Have you tried GENUKI and the Cumbria area, perhaps they have an indication for the whereabouts of the records.  If it's anything like the Yorkshire site, then you are laughing - hopefully  Grin

As this thread has now been moved to Cumberland, you may get a lot more help from local people.

Looks as though Whitehaven is your place:

"the area of West Cumbria bounded by the River Derwent in the north and the River Duddon in the south".  Telephone is 01946 506420.

Surprised you didn't get help from staff at Barrow Archives - did you ask them?  When I was in there earlier this year, they were talking to someone on the 'phone and not only did they advise her that the records she wanted would be at Whitehaven, they even transferred her 'phone call to Whitehaven, so she wouldn't have to call them herself.

The staff were very helpful to me and others who were there that day too.

Hi Lizzie,The people at Barrow have been very helpful especially Michael Stephens,I travelled up there from Sheffield on a limited three day time consuming trip.I had all the revellant details of my grandparents, great
grandparents but unfortunately my great grand parent was born in Egremont and not in the Barrow area like all my other ancestors. If I had known this fact I could have caught a train up to Egremont and found his details instead of concentrating on my grand-parents in Barrow.Bumbleb has given me the phone number of Whitehaven Records Office so I may get a result there or I will have to wait until next year a take a trip up to Whitehaven. Thanks for your help Lizzie,im new to this site only been on it a day and oh boy does it have a good response rate.Best wishes from Jeff2.

Hi,

Both the Whitehaven and Barrow CROs have been extremely helpful to me when I have enquired by post and latterly by e-mail. I usually get a reply within about 24 hours if the office is open.

Hi Jeff2

The Egremont parish records are definitely at the Whitehaven RO as I have consulted them many times when I have managed to get hubby to holiday there.

The staff there have always been an enormous help.  I recently emailed them to ask where the Whitehaven Registry Office would have been in 1931, as my grandparents [both from Egremont] married there.  They replied that working day after making several phone calls on my behalf.

Regards

Hi Jeff

There are also films of all the Parish Registers for Egremont in the Cumbria Record Office head Office in Carlisle Castle.  They wont have all the church warden's accounts etc though.

Best wishes
