Hi
I came to this one a bit late, but I'm a bit confused too!
If the list that Lorimer found was in the actual records, than the baotisms must be there. The only thing I can think of is that these old records tend to jump around as new books and rules were introduced so that all of the reel will not be in chronological order.
On the early part, there will be baptisms, burials and births, possibly a group of each per year, or even mixed up so needing a lot of reading, then among other changes a new marriage book comes in, so marriages are separate and eventually there are books with forms for all three events so they are separate.
This often means the reels jump around a bit and especially around 1800 you may get a small piece of register well away from the rest or even on another reel.
OIf these were still the submitted ones, then the area may be right but the church is passed down by word of notes or family notes and we can look else where. This area's still quite sparsely populated and most people won't live by the church.
My next choice would be Sebergham. Some chapels weren't open at this date or didn't do marriages. -Failing that, some older parishes would be Caldbeck, Dalston, Skelton or Greystoke, and of course some people even went to the towns - Penrith or Carlisle.
I would try Sebergham next though.
Best wishes

I have no experience with the record offices you mention, but I believe many if not all, will supply you with a photocopy of the birth, marriage or death entry for a couple of pounds - especially if you have the exact date and place.
I've done this via several RO's/Libraries (in other parts of the country) via email and received great service - a couple have even posted copies to me for free as it wasn't worth the hassle of converting Australian dollars to a UKŁ or two.
Good luck.

Hi there no luck...brickwall after brickwall didnt know there was so many bricklayers in my family. I have checked census records for 41,51,61,71,81 and each one gives a different date of birth and place of birth.Does this mean I have five different great grandfathers ?? What would you suggest I do..defeated...

Hi
Do you think your source has got confused between Egremont and Egton, or mistranscribed one or the other?
Egremont is in the West of the county, just south of Whitehaven and inland from St Bees.
Egton cun Newland is on the Southern tip of the county and was in Lancashire.
Do you think that it could be an Egton cum Newland baptism but they looked at Egremont? By the way, Egton cum Newland register only starts just before this in 1792, so if they chose to carry on a family tradition you may have to look at older churches close by.
Hope you manage to bash a hole in your brick wall!
Best wishes

PS If that occurs try Cartmel Priory.

Hi again.

If you think it is Efton rather than Egremont and you don't get anywhere with the RO, there's a copy of the registers in Lancashire RO Preston, so you could try asking for a look up on that board.
If he was definitely baptised in the Egremont area, you could try one of the Beckermet churches or St Bees. For nonconformists, probably Whitehaven.
Certainly there were loads of Jeffersons in the West Cumberland area.
Good luck!
Best wishes

Perhaps we should recap the information from censuses
1841 40-44 AgLab (NOT Lancs 1851 58 Farm Labourer, Egremont 1861 (wid) 65 Labourer, Bassenthwaite 1871 (wid) 73 Labourer, Wigton 1881 (wid) 79 Annuitant, Whicham (not sure if this was him - can't see an earlier death) 1885 (death) 83
So we have a spread of 50+miles - and nearly ten years!
BANG!!!!!!!!!
What was that?
I just shot a wild goose.
If that was him in 1881, I'm puzzled to get the connection with Thomas WITHERS - unless Thomas was a son of Robert's wife Jane before he married her. There was a son Thomas in 1841. Robert certainly wasn't closely related to Thomas's wife, Hannah PENNY.
They married- Marriages Sep 1867 PENNY Anna Ulverston 8e 953 WIDDERS Thomas Ulverston 8e 953

Hi Goeffe
Sorry, didn't know the places for the earlier census.
So he didn't move south until the 1870's. So the Whicham would be nearer Egton or he ncould have moved within the area.
Problem is if he was an Ag labourer he could have been moving every two minutes - or every season anyway! Sohe could be in practically any register in the Egremont area.
Hmmm!??!
Best wishes

HI
Link to gaps in the IGI.
The big one in the are I see in the area at that date is Cleator.
Problem is ag lba moved so often between censuses and also could have a few children baptised together at a later date - when they were near a chuch they knew? When they coukld get to service? ??
