Elizabeth Lewis/Packer
« on: Sunday 18 October 09 13:28 UTC (UK) »

On 6 Feb 1826, Elizabeth Lewis married my GGGG grandfather, John Packer, in Teddington, Middlesex.

Well, that's probably the correct marriage, but I only have the banns and the birth date of their 1st child in 1827 to go by.

In the 1841 census, mistranscribed as Pocker, Elizabeth (30) lived with her husband John (35) and their children, John (14), Matthew (12). Charles (10), Louisa (3), and Sophia (11 months) in Southwark.

The thing is, I have no idea where she was born. The 1841 census tells us she was born outside the registration county.

Can anyone help or offer advice?

Hi

I would first establish it is the correct marriage by obtaining one of the birth certificates of the children born after civil registration - if their births were registered - Sophia or Ann.

Since John was born in Sandwich Kent and the eldest child on the 1851 census was born in Marylebone you need to be certain with such a common surname as Lewis it really was Lewis.

Marriage banns do not confirm a marriage actually took place.

Have you found Elizabeth's death registration and her exact age at the time of her death? The 1841 census usually rounds down adults ages to the nearest 5.

Have you found the birthplaces of the two eldest children on the 1841 census?

Matthew married Rose Ann Wallis 2nd September 1867 St James the Great Bethnal Green - father's occupation John Packer basketmaker. Matthew appears to have been living with Rose Ann since at least the 1861 census and gives his birthplace as Whitechapel or London on censuses.

Cheers Valda,
                       Here's Sophia Packer's birth cert:

Sorry you cannot place a copy of the whole of a certificate onto the internet it infringes copyright. You can put up part of the image for instance that part that gives the mother's maiden name

This record taken from Ancestry's London birth index looks good. http://search.ancestry.co.uk/iexec/?htx=View&r=5538&dbid=1558&iid=31280_199053-00533&fn=John&ln=Packer&st=r&ssrc=pt_t12991621_p-142597273_g32768&pid=5328627. Looks like John and Elizabeth's eldest son, John, was born in Marylebone 27 Feb 1827.

Hi

If you have Sophia's birth certificate then you already know Elizabeth's maiden name - was it Lewis?
