Hello,
I was hoping that someone has Leigh, Surrey parish records and would kindly do a look up.
I've found on the IGI the following marriage and I'm hoping (fingers crossed!) that the Leigh parish records would detail the parents of the married couple so I can add the parents' names as definites:
Marriage: Thomas Woodman to Mary Flint June 24, 1829 - Leigh, Surrey
The IGI lists a Mary Flint born 1807 in Betchworth (near to Leigh) to Edward Flint and Charlotte and there's a Thomas Woodman born in East Clandon, Surrey b.1802 to Richard Woodman and Ann. Could these be the correct parents?
Also, it would appear (also from the IGI) that their child (born prior to the marriage) was as follows:
Jane Woodman Flint (Christening 17 May 1829 in Leigh) Mother: Mary Flint
Were there any other children born to Thomas Woodman and Mary Flint in Leigh?
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Jilly

Hi Jilly,
Pre-1837, parents' names are not recorded on marriage entries in the parish registers: there simply was not a "box" for this information to be entered. It is possible that the witnesses may be either a father or mother, but no relationships were recorded.
If either the bride or groom were a minor, then it is possible that the father would be named within the wording "with the consent of his/her father x" but not always.
There are no other Woodman baptisms in Leigh.

Hello Nell, Thanks very much for your reply and checking for other Woodman baptisms for Leigh!
That's a shame that there wouldn't be any parents noted for the marriage only maybe through clues from witnesses perhaps. I'm wondering now what other angle I could take to find out for sure the parents for both Thomas Woodman and Mary Flint. The ones that I'd mentioned that I'd found on the IGI which are from the nearby area of Leigh are possibilities, but it's only guesswork and there's nothing to prove it.
Thanks again for your help!
Jilly
