Charlotte Jaques, born Dublin 1808
« on: Sunday 18 October 09 21:43 UTC (UK) »

Trying to find the birth record for Charlotte jaques born 8 April 1808. Do not have parents details and that is what I am trying to find out. According to newspaper report of her death in Australia in 1902 she was born in Dublin (Whether that means county or city I don't know). Her father is reported to have come to Ireland during the French Revolution but we believe her mother was Irish.

She had a brother John who was a gilder and carver and he still resided in Dublin City c1841-1870. Charlotte married a john Black, a Blacksmith and the family lived in Port Stewart for some time (at least the last 4 of their 10 children were born in Port Stewart between 1846-1854.) They immigrated to Australia in 1858 on board the Frenchman.

Any help would be appreciated.

Portstewart in Co. Londonderry is quite a distance from Dublin.
According to obituary in Coleraine Chronicle, 26 Nov.1864, John Black (blacksmith, aged 65 years) died 7 Sept.1864 at Port Lincoln, South Australia.

Shaw's Directory 1850 shows a Zachariah Jaques (a carver) at 68 Jervis Street Dublin.
Any help?

Thanks for all the info. We think there might be a connection between Zachariah and our Jaques but are yet to confirm what it might be.

Is there any way to access the Coleraine Chronichles online as this might help with children's birth announcements etc.?

I will look into whether the John mentioned is our John.
Thanks

Coleraine Chronicle (started 1844) is not online but I already checked for births and none published (very few people put in birth notices at such an early date). Also checked Londonderry Sentinel (started 1829).

No more detail than what I posted- death notices at that time were very brief.

The Jaques/Jacques in Ireland were (almost all) of Huguenot origin

They seem to have spread, I went to school in Belfast with an Alan Jacques

And if his father was a schoolteacher I think I know the mother's family  Smiley

An advertisement in The Irish Times on Page 1 of the edition for 27th September 1864 refers to a Mr Jacques- Surgeon Dentist being at 208 Great Brunswick Street.    Any interest?

To be honest - I don't know. We don't have much information on the family back in Ireland other than a letter from Charlotte's brother John Jacques as previously mentioned. He had a daughter Alicia who apparently came to live with Charlotte and her husband due to her father's remarriage. Her mother's name was apparently Mary Smith (!! HEaven save us from common names!!). Alicia also came to Australia, apparently before John and Charlotte Black and their children but they all lived near one another.

That's all the info we can confirm at this stage although there might be other relo's out there with more info.

Thanks for all your help

Add another one to the heap as it might be relevant.
The deaths section of The Irish Times for October 8th 1867 records the death of Henry Jacques late of Abbey Street Dublin.
