Robert and Lydia farlow
« on: Monday 19 October 09 02:31 UTC (UK) »

I am hoping that someone will be able to help me.
my husband 's tree has been traced back to the first fleet in 1788.
in 1801 Robert Farlow was transported on the "Canada".
Robert was born in 1778, he married Anne Dyer on the 27th jan 1799 at  St. Mary"s in Portsea England.
Anne came free with Robert and their daughter Maria.
We are trying to trace Robert's parents, all we know is that they were Robert and Lydia.
I know it is not much to go on but i thought that perhaps someone might be able to shed some light on this subject.
thankyou

Hi Ausmaz

Welcome to RootsChat.

Robert was not baptised in Hampshire as far as I can see.   Sad

How reliable is the information about his parents' names?  I can't remember about Australian death certificates, but was it there?

IGI FamilySearch records a baptism in the City of London at St Sepulchre, 22 Apr 1778 with those parents. But I can't find a marriage for them.

Is there any indication why Robert was in Portsea, rather a long way from his origins?

Nell

Hi Auzmaz

Robert Farlow was convicted for stealing 5 iron bolts at Quarter sessions held at  the Guildhall, Portsmouth on Thursday 14th January, 1801.

He was sentenced to seven years transportation. Transported with him was William Wright for stealing a watch, John Kelly for stealing a red cloak, and James Chapman for stealing a silver watch.

Info from Portsmouth Telegraph or Mottley's Naval and Military Journal January 19, 1801.

On Monday February, 2nd 1801, the same newspaper, in an advert dated 19th January, 1801,  reported that Robert Farlow, a labourer at the dock yard was convicted for stealing iron bolts and sentenced to seven years transportation.

So it would appear that Robert Farlow was in Portsmouth for work, working as a dock labourer when he was accused of stealing 5 iron bolts, found guilty and sentenced.
