Hello
I was wondering if anyone with access to transcriptions/scans/originals of the baptism records could have a look at this for me. I'm trying to find out who, if anyone, was recorded as being his father.
Thanks
Martin

However if you take a look at TNA site http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=179-par492&cid=27-2-21&kw=Eleanor%20Ellis#27-2-21 hope the link works there is a warrant for a putative father - Henry Harman

That's interesting, because Eleanor went on to marry a Henry HarMER...could this be the same person, I wonder?

More than likely, the surnames seem to be interchangeable. I'll look into it, I have Harmer's in my tree

The bastardy examination http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=179-par492&cid=27-1-33&kw=Eleanor%20Ellis#27-1-33 actually says Henry Harmer.

That's great, Kerry.
I guess we'll never know exactly what happened, but I feel I can chalk Henry up as an ancestor now.
Many thanks

Now on the SFHG there are two Henry Harmers born the right time. One in Eastbourne and one in Heathfield.
Bit of a guess but I bet this is the Heathfield one, its not that far to Ticehurst.
Henry Harmer baptised 25 August 1765 to Thomas and Mary Harmer at Heathfield.
I have a number of Thomas's in my tree that could fit hmmmm

The research I've seen also has parents Thomas and Mary (née Gurr). Some researchers take the Harmers back to John, born 1483(!), but I've yet to check the reliability of this information.

Hi Martin
Mine goes back to John born about 1489, most of the data has or is being double checked by me. Not found any data for the first John except for a mention in a deed dated 1546 as a tenant at Pelshurst, Heathfield. Several of the early generations are mentioned in wills and other documents.
Heathfield records where they appear to be don't start mentioning them till late 1500s.

Hi Kerry
I'm guessing the line back to 1489 doesn't include Henry in it, then?
Thanks

I don't think he is. I can't identify on my tree a suitable Thomas to have married Mary Gurr in 1748/49. The Thomas's I have are either too old or too young. I bet he fits in somewhere though.

Hi Kerry
I was wondering, are you a member of the Harmer Family Association and, if so, if you thought it would be worth joining?

I am and I think it has been well worth joining. They have recently redone the Harmer website http://www.harmer.org/ which looks promising and it is always useful to have others to bat ideas off and to help with research. Plus when you join you get a paper copy of the family tree with your personal line on it.
