Tain, 1881 Census
« on: Monday 19 October 09 11:08 UTC (UK) »

Hi!

I am looking for my Mckenzie ancestors who were living in Tain in 1871 and 1891 but I cant find them in 1881. Are the census records for Tain available/complete for 1881? I can't seem to find anyone living in Tain!

Thanks! I'm obviously not very good at this.....yet!

I am looking for John(b.1844) and Mary Mckenzie(b.1842), living in Academy Street, with their children David, John, William, Jessie, Alexander, and Jane.

Well done Ev - that fits perfectly with the family's 1871 entry  Smiley From 1871:

John McKenzie 25, shoemaker b. Dornock
Mary McKenzie 27, b. Cromarty
David McKenzie 2, b. Tain
John McKenzie 1, b. Tain

Address: Dunrobin St, Tain

Sometimes Ancestry just gobbles up entire families  Grin

Thankyou so much!!

It's like making a jigsaw puzzle, really frustrating when there's a piece missing even if you can guess what it looks like!

And it gives me a new mystery to solve! Who is James, aged 9 in the 1881 census? Supposedly a son of John and Mary but I haven't found any record of him yet....
I'm really enjoying this!

Is it Mackenzie not Mckenzie?

Maybe that's why I couldn't find it!

On birth certificates is it usually the family who decides the spelling or the person doing the writing? All his siblings are Mckenzie.

Thanks again!

hi Bee

usually better to look for both Mc and Mac as it could vary on certificates
and census even within the same family
i've had experience of this researching mcvicar/macvicar
