I have a real needle in a haystack with this one. So if someone really wants a challenge a lookup for him will be appreciated.
what I do know about him in very little;
He died at Winton, Queensland Australia 30 June 1889 aged 71
married Bridget King at Ipswich Qld 1852
At the time of his death he had been in Queensland for 53 years, suggesting he arrived app. 1836 aged about 18 years
Given his age at death, he appears to have been born c1818. His place of birth was given as Nottingham England. Willsee if I can locate parents names.
I don't know if he was a convict or a free settler, if he was unassisted or assisted passage.

Are you sure this is all the same person?
If he went to Queensland at 18 in 1836 and stayed for 53 yrs, he would not have married in Ipswich in 1856 - unless he came back to UK and then back to Queensland.
How are you sure that the Ipswich marriage is him?
If you are sure, then getting the marriage cert will give his fathers name, and be the first step to going back a generation.

That explians everything! Silly me - I misread Ipswich Qld 1852 for Ipswich Qtr 1852

Good Morning all,
According to his death registration, William's father was also William Fitzgerald mother unknown.
The Ipswich that they married at is now part of Queensland, at the time it was part of the NSW colony.
As I said in my previous post - working backward - it would seem William arrived into Australia about 1935/6 -
This is only a guess given his years in Qld on the death reg. It may breakdown to being in Queensland for less than the entire 53 years, but given he married in 1853 he did spend at least the last 37 years there as his wife was working on a property in/near Ipswich when they met. -c1852
Given the timeline for the settlement of Qld, I am doubtful he came directly into Qld.
Which suggests he was about 18 when he did arrive in Australia, take 10 to 14 years off that for possibility being a guest of Her Majesty (a convict) he has had 6 - 10 years to get to Qld and set up his business of being a hawker.
as I said a real needle in a haystack.
