COMPLETED; Definition of "Grandson"
« on: Monday 19 October 09 18:35 UTC (UK) »

On the 1851 census for Abingdon, two of my ancestors are listed as grandsons to John and Ann Turner.  However, as I can find no blood link to James and Philip Stockwell, I wondered if perhaps they were godsons instead.

I have traced Ann [or Hannah] marriage to John Turner and found she was a widow with the name of Wadley, nee Ackling.  I have looked at the 1841 and 1861 censuses but still can find no link.

Any suggestions please?

Hi Pippa

I'm sure someone will tell me if I'm wrong but I've not come across any other meaning for grandson than the one we have now.  I know son-in-law used to be used for step-son but not heard anything similar about grandson.

They did used to 'adopt' children back then though - take in a child who had lost his/her parents - no official records to check unfortunately.  Perhaps the offspring of a child like that would be referred to as a grandchild?

Christine, thanks for the info. I think your theory may be correct because the children's mother had died a few years previously and the 1851 census shows their father working away in Aston Clinton, Bucks.

John & Ann TURNER may well have been 'token' grandparents as both children were recorded scholars although the younger was aged only 3, so it appears likely their father was paying for their keep and school fees.

The accuracy of census entries is only as good as the information provided by the family;  sometimes distorted by an enumerator's inability to read his own notes.  I have instances where grandsons are recorded nephews and printers are recorded painters.  I don't regard any census return as 'gospel' truth - not even 1911!

Thank you dee-jay.  I think the general consensus of opinion is that the Turners were 'token' grandparents whilst the father was away working.
Thank you very much for your response.
