Sassenach needs help

Can anyone in Helensburgh please help me in my search for my great,great grandmothers family ? She was born in Helensburgh in 1832 Janet Dunlop her father was John Dunlop a carpenter. Thats all I know. As I live in Lancashire I'm having trouble getting any further. Janet married my great,great grandfather James Curwen in the English Lake District in 1854

Cannot see anything in Helensburgh but there is a likely candidate in Barony, Glasgow. what proof do you have regarding Helensburgh?

I have a copy of her marriage certificate, and have found her gravestone to verify dates. there is a record of a janet dunlop & sister & mother in Scotlands 1841 census living in Row which I now believe is known as Rhu, don't know if his is correct. I served in RN @ Faslane in 1965, my daughter is Scottish ad as a widow now lives in Glasgow, I am doing this mainly for her. Thanks for your reply

I have a look at the 1841 census and as you says it shows 4 females
Princess Street, Helensburgh
Janet 55 of independant means "N"ot of this parish
Mary  18 Dress maker "N"
Catherine 9 "Y" of this Parish
Janet       5  "Y"

There is no relationship so could Catherine & Janet be Janet Snr grandchildren?
In 1851 Janet Snr is there and she is keeper of Lodgers  born Lanark, Glasgow
Catherine is there 16  servant born Helensburgh but no Mary or Janet??

Janet Snr died in 1855. Her parents were John Mongomery and Janet Gardner, she was born in Anderson Glasgow her husband was Thomas Dunlop.

It lists her children and ther are two Janets one dec'd the other 40, Mary 33   and Catherine decd  Ages don't seam to match, but it is the son in law George Buchanan, he was the lodger in 1851 and may have married Catherine(both same age), so he may have got it wrong.

From the Family search, it would appear all or most of her children were born in Rothesay I.O.B.


You need to have a look at all this information for yourself  but could your Janet be the grandchild and was not registered?Huh?
