Family name Gordon

I am researching the name Richard henry Gordon who is my G.grandfather and who I thought came from Cumberland/Brampton.  When I found him on the 1891 census it said place of birth Preston Lancashire b.1870.  On his marriage cert his father was called Henry Gordon a retired grocer.  There are only two Richard Gordons i have found on the 1881 census and I am still none the wiser because his father Henry is on none of them.  Can someone help please because I am pulling my hair out
