Can u look up Huntingdonshire workhouse records for me?
« on: Tuesday 20 October 09 03:51 UTC (UK) »

Hi there

Could anyone check the Huntingdonshire workhouse records to see whether a Hannah Jane Bate or Bates was born in June of 1863 to mother Jane Bate or Bates?

If so, is there a death date or discharge date for the mother, Jane Bate or Bates?

thanks alot in advance.

You can check birth and death registrations yourself at www.freebmd.org.uk

There's a Hannah Jane Bate birth registered in Huntingdon in the Sept quarter 1863. As 6 weeks were allowed for registration, a birth in June could well have been registered in July. You'll get more details if you purchase the certificate from the GRO at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

There's no death of a Jane Bate in Huntingdon in 1863.

I don't know of any posters on this board who go into Huntingdon Records Office. You may need to pay the Records Office to check for you

Thanks Bedfordshire boy. The person you mention is her... I did order her birth certificate and while it does not say that she was born in a workhouse, I was wondering if the info on the certificate was false and that she might in fact  have been born in a workhouse. She was born to a single mother and my guess is that many of their children were born in workhouses in those days.

Whilst it's true that many illegitimate children were born in the workhouse, I've found that in those cases it was the master of the workhouse who registered the birth, usually within a few days. Of course it might have varied from workhouse to workhouse.

What address is given - a proper street address or just the name of the village?

The person who registered her birth is the fellow with whom she lived, as a nurse child or foster child, for much or all of her childhood. That fellow was married with two children of his own and one other foster child.

This fellow's address is also given on her birth certificate as the place she was born.

It doesn't look to me as though Hannah Jane was born in the workhouse. I wouldn't assume though that the "fellow with whom she lived" was necessarily the father.
