Printing a tree from raw data
« on: Tuesday 20 October 09 09:53 UTC (UK) »

I have searched the old posts here but didn't find what I am looking for, that is, any software which will take ASCII data produced by an old DOS-based system and simply draw decent-looking family trees.  I am aware that it might be simpler, but I don't want to have to transfer all my ASCII data to a FH program as I can already maintain the names, dates etc on my current system.  I am able to modify the data format to suit the family-tree drawing software.

Any ideas?

Hello Malcolm,

A little more detail may help, please. In itself, ASCII is simply a character encoding scheme rather than a file format.
Does the data file have a (.xxx) extension and do you know which program was used to create the data file on the old DOS system?
If those elements can be identified then it would help in being able to advise.

I wrote the programs in Basic which produce the data and this as a simple text file [my system doesn't need to give the filename an extension as I only use it within that system] or as an html file, but I could produce the data in a format such as

1 father
 1 mother
 2 child #1
 3 child #2

to feed into a drawing program.

What I chiefly want to do is to take a family tree such as you can see at

http://www.calderdalecompanion.co.uk/_l847.html

and

http://www.calderdalecompanion.co.uk/_a184.html

and reorganise this as a familiar tree with boxes around the individuals.  Does that make sense?

Hello Malcolm,

Thanks for the clarification. My mistake, I thought you were referring to a commercial program as the source of the data.

The simplest solution might be to convert your text file into a Gedcom file. That done you could read the file using virtually any FH program of your choice.

The Gedcom standard is documented at http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pmcbride/gedcom/55gcint.htm

Thanks, Graham, in the absence of a simple data-to-chart program, that may be the way for me to go.

Best wishes
