Help with 1841 census - MacLennan
« on: Tuesday 20 October 09 13:11 UTC (UK) »

I cannot find this family anywhere. Alexander MacLennan, born in Gairloch (1805-1815??), married Anne Morrison in Contin in 1834. They had least 2 children before 1841:

Farquhar born Gairloch 30 MAR 1835
Murdo born Urquhart & Logie Wester 28 JUL 1838

Chances are high that there was a daughter also born before 1841:

Christian born 1836 or 37

I cannot find any family that comes even slightly close to them in 1841. An assumption would be that they emigrated. But then in 1843 there's another child born in Scotland:

Roderick born 31 DEC 1843. Father Alexander is registered as a gamekeeper in Tombuie.

In 1851 the only family that comes close to them is in Conon Village, Urquhart & Logie Wester:

Ann McLennan 40 head, married, born Gairloch
Murdoch 12 son, born Urquhart
Grace 10 born Gairloch
Roderick 8 born Gairloch
Donald 5 born Gairloch
Ann 2 born Gairloch

No Farquhar there, but he could have died young. No Alexander either (the father), who died after 1867. For possible daughter Christian, I think I've found her living with uncles in Rosskeen.

Any help with this family is very welcome. In fact any reference to an Alexander MacLennan gamekeeper in the time period 1841-1861 is enough to give me a new line to start researching.

Apart from Carol's entry, there is also this one:

Alexr McLenan 35, MS
Anna McLenan 30
Christian McLenan 10
Murdo McLenan 6
N K McLenan 2 Mo
Janet McKenzie 20
Peter Morrison 28, MS

Address: Diabaig, Applecross, R & C

Names are good, but ages of children don't fit what you have. MS stands for male servant, normally used for farm/estate workers.

Could be Carole, or the Grace who shows as aged 10 in 1851.

I've checked Freecen for the children's ages for that 1841 census entry and they have them as Ancestry's, so hard to say  Undecided

The only Alexander McLennan, gamekeeper, I have been able to find so far shows as widowed in 1851 so can't be him either.

Hi Carole and Monica,

Thanks for that wonderful work. You've provided just what I need: new clues to continue the search. Alexander is the main one I want to pin down. The 1861 census looks promising, and gives me an age to start searching for his death and confirm if it's him. Fact that Ann is not there can also be a good sign, because she was deceased in 1866 (marriage of son Roderick), and as I've never been able to find her death record, I presume she probably died before 1855.

Son Roderick's absence in 1861 also makes sense. He was a butler in Edinburgh in 1866, when he married, so he had probably left the family by then.

I'll work on the info from that 1861 census and then move backwards, because I still need to confirm if the 1851 family I have is the one I'm looking for. For 1841 Applecross is a possibility because my Gairloch MacLennans did have frequent links with Applecross.

Many thanks to both,
Francisco

Yes, confirmed, that's them in 1861. Based on age/place, I found Alexander's death and discovered he married 3 times. That same year, 1861, he married a Mary Greig in Turriff, which fully confirms that's him in the census. Again all my thanks...

That great that you have managed to confirm details Francisco  Smiley Lucky that Alexander remarried when he did!
