Dear Waxwing, Well, if you are a complete amateur that makes 2 of us. I admit to being quite foxed because I've just realised that although I can search the World War records I haven't a clue about those who served before 1914. I'm sure by this evening a lot of people with Military knowledge will have come to your rescue, but in the meantime it might be worth while you trying the National Archive site ( www.nationalarchives.gov.uk ) because they have a large military section which may give you some pointers. Good luck - and I'll come back and see what proper advice you get so I can learn as well, Maggie

I would not bother with the National Archives site, apart from http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/army/step4.htm
This is from the Boer War medal roll - Peckover, C.D.,Lance Corporal,14th Hussars, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast, Cape Colony, OFS, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith. From 10th Hussars
These are the clasps he earned with his Queens South Africa medal - http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/queens_south_africa_medal.htm If you go through each one you will discover where he was for part of the time.
Regarding - 2823,Charles Daniel Peckover,1900-13,10H,6352 – 2823 might be his 14th Hussar number, and 6352 might be his 10th Hussar number, but it is not clearPre WW1 records are filed according to date of discharge; the last period being 1900 to 1913. If you cannot get to Kew to check to see if his papers survive, you will have to wait for Findmypast who are putting pre-WW1 online by 2011.. see later post
If he was serving in the early 1890s you may find him in the Muster Books (WO16) in the 10th Hussars. So can you give an idea of his age?
Ken

Ken, I'm sorry to be thick, but can you tell me how where you found the detailed information for Waxwing? Was it on the link you gave, or somewhere else? Maggie
