Please help a complete amateur??
« on: Tuesday 20 October 09 14:52 UTC (UK) »

I wish to find out more about my great grandfather whilst serving with the 14th Kings Hussars. I have been given the following information;

2823,Charles Daniel Peckover,1900-13,10H,6352.

Does this mean anything and if so, where do I go from here? Your help and advice to a complete and utter amateur would be greatly appreciated!!

Dear Waxwing,
Well, if you are a complete amateur that makes 2 of us.
I admit to being quite foxed because I've just realised that although I can search the World War records I haven't a clue about those who served before 1914.
I'm sure by this evening a lot of people with Military knowledge will have come to your rescue, but in the meantime it might be worth while you trying the National Archive site ( www.nationalarchives.gov.uk ) because they have a large military section which may give you some pointers.
Good luck - and I'll come back and see what proper advice you get so I can learn as well,
Maggie

I would not bother with the National Archives site, apart from http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/army/step4.htm

This is from the Boer War medal roll - Peckover, C.D.,Lance Corporal,14th Hussars, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast, Cape Colony, OFS, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith. From 10th Hussars

These are the clasps he earned with his Queens South Africa medal - http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/queens_south_africa_medal.htm If you go through each one you will discover where he was for part of the time.

Regarding - 2823,Charles Daniel Peckover,1900-13,10H,63522823 might be his 14th Hussar number, and 6352 might be his 10th Hussar number, but it is not clearPre WW1 records are filed according to date of discharge; the last period being 1900 to 1913. If you cannot get to Kew to check to see if his papers survive, you will have to wait for Findmypast who are putting pre-WW1 online by 2011.see later post

If he was serving in the early 1890s you may find him in the Muster Books (WO16) in the 10th Hussars. So can you give an idea of his age?

Ken, I'm sorry to be thick, but can you tell me how where you found the detailed information for Waxwing?   Was it on the link you gave, or somewhere else?

No it's on a CD of the Boer War medal roll for the (regular) cavalry units.

I have worked out what 2823,Charles Daniel Peckover,1900-13,10H,6352 means.

You have googled the name and found the list of miss-sorts of records in Kew in WO97. It is on Kevin Asplin's site. 2823 will be his number while his papers are in the box (covering 1900 to 1913 discharges) with reference WO97/6352 in Kew.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATLN=6&CATID=695290&SearchInit=4&CATREF=WO97%2F6352

He must have gone back to the 10th Hussars after the Boer War.

Hello Ken,

He was born in December 1872 in Kidderminster. Again I'm a complete novice so bare with me but..how do I go on about seeing his records? Please advise.

Maggie, just like you I'm trying to learn a bit from these good people! Thanks for your feedback! Much appreciated.
